Office Chair Height Adjustment Guide

Admin October 11, 2026

The method for lowering an office chair depends on its adjustment mechanism. Here are the common types and steps:

1. Pneumatic Adjustment (Most Common Type) Pneumatic chairs adjust height using a gas cylinder, operated via a lever typically located on the right side beneath the seat (usually a long lever). Steps:

  • Preparation: Sit steadily and maintain balance to avoid wobbling during adjustment.
  • Lever Operation: Grasp the lever with your right hand and gently lift it upward. This unlocks the gas cylinder. Lift your body slightly (about 5-10 cm) to use your weight as downward pressure.
  • Slow Descent: Keep the lever lifted and rely on your weight to lower the chair gradually. Key Point: Ensure a uniform descent speed to prevent sudden drops that could damage the gas cylinder.
  • Height Locking: When your feet are flat on the ground and your thighs are parallel to the floor, release the lever. The gas cylinder automatically locks the current height. Safety Tip: Avoid forcefully pulling the lever while suspended to prevent abnormal internal pressure in the gas cylinder that could cause it to burst.

2. Mechanical Adjustment (Screw/Rotary Type) Some older or budget office chairs use mechanical structures, adjusting height by rotating a knob or screw. Steps:

  • Locate the Knob: Find the circular knob at the center of the chair base or a hidden adjustment screw on the side (some models require lifting the base cover).
  • Rotation Adjustment: Rotate the knob clockwise (or loosen the screw counterclockwise and manually press down the seat) to lower the chair gradually. Note: Apply moderate rotation force; excessive force may cause thread wear.
  • Height Fixing: After adjusting to the desired height, rotate the knob counterclockwise (or tighten the screw) to ensure the seat is stable and does not wobble. Applicable Scenarios: Suitable for fixed office chairs without gas cylinders or as an emergency adjustment when the gas cylinder fails.

3. Electric Adjustment (Premium Models) Office chairs equipped with electric motors can be adjusted via buttons, offering the simplest operation. Steps:

  • Locate Buttons: Find buttons marked with up/down arrows or height adjustment symbols on the side of the armrest or the base control panel.
  • Automatic Adjustment: Press and hold the down button (usually marked with โ€œโ†“โ€) to lower the chair at a constant speed; release the button to stop.
  • Height Memory: Some models support memory functions, allowing preset heights to be switched with one button. Advantage: No manual force required, suitable for users with mobility issues or those seeking convenience.

Additional Notes: If the chair remains unstable after adjustment, it may be due to gas cylinder leakage, loose screws, or electric module failure. Contact the manufacturer for repairs. It is recommended to refer to the product manual first, as designs may vary among brands, and some models may require simultaneous operation of multiple components for adjustment.
