Adjusting the Height of an Office Chair
Admin October 16, 2026
The standard range for adjusting the height of an office chair is 40-50 centimeters. Adjustments should be made in accordance with sitting comfort and ergonomic principles, as detailed below:

I. Sitting Adjustment Method
Operating the Control Lever or Knob
- After sitting down, locate the control lever at the bottom or side of the chair (usually a metal lever or plastic knob). For some models, pull the lever upward to raise the seat and press it downward to lower it; pneumatic chairs can be fine-tuned by repeatedly pushing the lever up and down.
- If unsure about the lever's function, read the manual or try each option one by one: move only a few centimeters at a time to avoid imbalance caused by rapid adjustments. Stop when your thighs are parallel to the ground and your feet are flat on the floor, then return the lever to its locked position.
Verifying Comfort
- After sitting, check that you can easily fit the thickness of one palm under your thighs. If there is insufficient space or your feet are dangling, further adjustment is needed; if your knees are pressed by the front edge of the chair, raise the height to relieve pressure.
- If your feet cannot touch the ground, add a footrest for support to prevent leg fatigue from dangling.
II. Standing Adjustment Method (for when sitting adjustments are limited)
Initial Height Positioning
- Stand in front of the chair and adjust the seat height so that the front edge is just below your knees. When you sit down, you should naturally keep your feet flat on the ground and your thighs parallel to the ground.
- For pneumatic chairs, repeatedly press the lever for fine adjustments; for mechanical chairs, loosen the fixing screws, manually adjust the seat cushion up or down, and then tighten the screws to secure it.
Secondary Calibration
- After sitting, check again that your lower back is supported by the chair back and that your arms hang naturally with your elbows bent at a 90ยฐ angle (if used with a desk). If the height is still uncomfortable, adjust the desk height simultaneously or consider replacing the chair model.
III. Precautions
- Avoid Extreme Heights: Heights exceeding 50 centimeters may cause your feet to dangle, while heights below 40 centimeters can compress blood vessels in your thighs; both require adjustment to the standard range.
- Regularly Check Stability: After adjustment, gently shake the chair to ensure there is no looseness or unusual noise. For pneumatic chairs, check the air rod's seal (replace it if there is air leakage).
- Adapt to Individual Differences: Users taller than 185 cm or shorter than 155 cm are advised to choose professional office chairs with a wider adjustable range or compensate for height differences by adding seat cushions/footrests.
By following these methods, you can scientifically adjust the height of your office chair, reduce the risk of back pain and lower limb numbness caused by prolonged sitting, and improve work efficiency and health.
