Office Chair Height Adjustment

Admin October 14, 2026

The height adjustment function of office chairs is primarily achieved through height-positioning devices, with common types including pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems, among which pneumatic systems are the most widely used.

Pneumatic height-adjustable chairs rely on a gas lift cylinder as their core component, which consists of a cylinder, piston, housing, and height adjustment lever. One end of the cylinder is connected to the bottom of the seat, while the piston end is fixed to the top of the housing, which features a small push valve controlled by the adjustment lever. When the user operates the lever, the gas inside the cylinder is compressed or released, creating a pressure differential that drives the piston's movement, thereby adjusting the seat's height. This process is based on the inverse relationship between gas volume and pressure: compressing the gas increases pressure, pushing the piston downward; releasing the gas decreases pressure, allowing the piston to rise under the seat's weight. The gas lift cylinder not only provides height adjustment but also ensures stable support for the seat through internal high-pressure gas, ensuring safety and comfort during use.

Some high-end ergonomic chairs further optimize the basic height adjustment function with advanced designs. For example, the Sihoo M56 Second Generation features a 6cm adjustable backrest, allowing users to adjust the backrest height according to their sitting posture or scenario needs via a free-locking mechanism, enhancing the fit of lumbar support. The Saigu Apollo X3 offers four-level lumbar support adjustment and four-level backrest height adjustment, enabling users to independently control the lumbar support position to match different body types or adjust the backrest height for office or rest scenarios. These designs achieve multi-dimensional adjustments through modular structures, typically relying on additional mechanical transmission devices (such as gears and slide rails) working in tandem with the pneumatic height adjustment system, preserving the convenience of pneumatic adjustment while enhancing functional flexibility.

It is important to note that the safety of pneumatic height-adjustable chairs depends on the quality of the gas lift cylinder. Poor-quality cylinders may suffer from inadequate sealing, leading to gas leakage, height adjustment failure, or sudden seat sinking. If the cylinder is filled with non-inert gases (such as oxygen), there is even a risk of explosion under high temperatures or frequent adjustments. Therefore, choosing products certified by BIFMA (Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association) or compliant with GB/T 38611-2020 'Office Chairs - Gas Springs' national standard can effectively reduce usage risks. Additionally, users should avoid frequent and rapid height adjustments during daily use to prevent accelerated wear caused by sudden pressure changes inside the cylinder.
