Office Chair Height Adjustment

Admin October 12, 2026

If an office chair is not tall enough, it can be resolved by adjusting the lever, replacing the gas lift, or adjusting the chair feet. Here are the specific operations and precautions:

I. Adjusting the Height Using the Lever

If the office chair is equipped with a height adjustment function, prioritize adjusting the height using the lever. The lever is usually located beneath the seat or on the side, often a black or silver metal rod. To operate, lift or press down on the rod while gently pressing or lifting the seat with your body to allow the gas lift to extend or retract, thereby changing the height. Some levers have a locking function; after adjustment, the rod needs to be reset (such as by pressing down or rotating back to its original position) to secure the height.
Precautions:

  • Maintain body balance during adjustment to avoid falling due to sudden seat movement;
  • If the lever does not respond, it may be due to insufficient internal pressure or damage to the gas lift, requiring further inspection or replacement.

II. Replacing the Gas Lift (When the Lever Fails)

If the lever completely fails, you need to replace it with a compatible gas lift. The steps are as follows:

  1. Select a compatible model: Purchase a new gas lift based on the chair's weight capacity requirements (e.g., ordinary office chairs typically have a weight capacity of 100-120kg) and the gas lift's diameter (common sizes are 25mm and 28mm);
  2. Release seat pressure: Invert or tilt the chair to prevent the high-pressure gas inside the gas lift from popping out and causing injury during disassembly;
  3. Remove the old gas lift: Use a wrench or other tools to unscrew the fixing screws and slowly pull out the old gas lift;
  4. Install the new gas lift: Align the new gas lift with the mounting holes on the chair feet and the bottom of the seat, tighten the screws, and test for stability.
    Precautions:
  • Do not use violent tools (such as hammers) to strike the gas lift to prevent internal high-pressure gas from exploding;
  • After replacement, test whether the seat can be raised and lowered smoothly to avoid jamming or wobbling.

III. Adjusting the Chair Feet (A Simple Temporary Solution)

If the chair has no adjustment function and the gas lift cannot be replaced, you can temporarily resolve the issue by elevating the chair feet. Select stable materials such as wood or rubber pads with a thickness not exceeding 5cm and evenly place them under the chair feet, ensuring that the contact surface between the pads and the chair feet is flat to avoid tipping due to uneven force distribution.
Precautions:

  • After elevation, test the stability of the seat to avoid tipping during movement or changes in sitting posture;
  • This method is only suitable for short-term use; long-term elevation may affect the structural balance of the chair.

IV. Safety and Ergonomic Fit After Adjustment

Regardless of the method used, after adjustment, ensure that the seat meets ergonomic standards: your feet should be flat on the ground, knees bent at a 90ยฐ angle, and your waist should be in contact with the seat backrest to avoid a hollow waist or pressure on the legs. If discomfort persists after adjustment, it may be due to the chair's design or usage habits, requiring further evaluation of whether the chair needs to be replaced.
