Office Chair Height Adjustment
The height adjustment function of office chairs is mainly achieved through pneumatic rods, hydraulic devices, or mechanical structures, with each type having its own characteristics.

Pneumatic height adjustment is the most common type in office chairs currently. Its core component is the pneumatic rod. The pneumatic rod is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas internally, and the height of the chair is adjusted through the up-and-down movement of the piston. For example, the Jingdong Jingzao Z5 Pro ergonomic chair uses a Grade 4 pneumatic rod, paired with a 50mm adjustable backrest. Users can precisely adjust the support position according to their height and sitting posture needs. The adjustment process of the pneumatic rod is usually controlled by an operating lever under the chair. Simply lifting or pressing it can complete the height adjustment, which is convenient and responsive. The grade of the pneumatic rod (such as Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4) reflects its safety and load-bearing capacity. The higher the grade, the stronger the safety and stability.
Hydraulic height adjustment relies on the cooperation of hydraulic oil and pistons, generating pressure through a hydraulic pump to achieve height adjustment. This structure is commonly found in early or industrial chairs. The adjustment process is relatively slow but highly stable, suitable for scenarios that require precise height control. However, the maintenance cost of hydraulic height adjustment is relatively high, and there may be a risk of oil leakage, so it is less commonly used in modern office chairs.
Mechanical height adjustment is usually achieved through threaded rods or gear structures. Users change the height of the chair by rotating or pulling the adjustment device. This structure is simple and durable, but the adjustment process requires manual operation and has relatively low precision. It is commonly found in budget-friendly or retro-style office chairs. For example, some spiral height-adjustable chairs adjust the height by rotating the threaded rod under the seat plate. Although the operation is slightly strenuous, the structure is reliable and suitable for users who are sensitive to cost.
In addition, some high-end ergonomic chairs combine multiple adjustment methods. For example, the Igrow Alpha ergonomic chair has flexible height adjustment and may use both a pneumatic rod and a mechanical structure to meet users' needs for comfort and personalization. When choosing, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the usage scenario, budget, and safety requirements. Priority should be given to pneumatic rod products that have passed international safety certifications (such as BIFMA, SGS) to ensure safety during use.
