Office Chair Height Adjustment

Admin October 11, 2026

There are several methods to increase the height of an office chair from a low position, and you can choose the appropriate one based on the chair type and actual needs:

I. Directly Adjust the Seat Height

  1. Using the Adjustment Lever This method is suitable for office chairs equipped with basic lifting functions. Locate the metal adjustment lever (usually black or silver) beneath or on the side of the seat. Pressing the lever upward while lightly pressing down on the seat with your body lowers the height, and pressing the lever downward while lifting your body off the seat raises the height. Some chairs have a locking function on the lever; after adjustment, reset the lever to fix the height.

  2. Pneumatic Adjustment For office chairs controlled by a pneumatic rod. Move away from the seat or slightly lift off the seat surface. Pull up the single or double adjustment handle beneath the seat cushion while lightly lifting the cushion with both hands to raise the height using the elasticity of the pneumatic rod. The handle automatically locks the height when released. If you are relatively light in weight, you can stand and directly lift the seat cushion while pulling the handle to assist in raising the height.

  3. Screw-type Adjustment This method is applicable to old-fashioned mechanical adjustment chairs or some fixed-height models that require manual adjustment. Find the knob at the bottom of the pneumatic rod or support rod. Turning the knob counterclockwise gradually raises the seat, and after adjusting to the appropriate height, turn the knob clockwise to tighten and fix it.

II. Replace or Add Accessories

  1. Replace the Pneumatic Rod If the original pneumatic rod is damaged or the adjustment fails, purchase a compatible new pneumatic rod (pay attention to parameters such as load-bearing capacity and pipe diameter). Before operation, release the seat pressure to prevent the pneumatic rod from popping out and causing injury. Remove the old rod and install the new one in its original position.

  2. Adjust the Chair Leg Structure

    • Use Seat Cushions or Footrests: Place anti-slip seat cushions on the seat surface or sturdy footrests on the ground to indirectly raise the sitting height and relieve lower back pressure.
    • Replace with Taller Chair Legs: Measure the interface size of the original chair legs, purchase matching heightening accessories, use a wrench to remove the old chair legs and install the new ones, and test the stability to ensure that the five-star base touches the ground evenly.
    • Add Heightening Foot Pads: Choose metal or plastic foot pads with anti-slip designs and place them directly at the bottom of the chair legs. This can increase the height by 5-15 cm and is suitable for fixed-height chairs that cannot be adjusted.
  3. Replace with a Longer Pneumatic Rod If the stroke of the original pneumatic rod is insufficient, purchase a longer pneumatic rod of the same model. After confirming the diameter and length of the pneumatic rod, disassemble the base and replace it with the new rod. Use tools and pay attention to safety during operation.

III. Precautions

  • Safety First: Avoid using violent tools when disassembling the pneumatic rod to prevent it from exploding. After adjustment, test the stability of the seat to avoid wobbling or collapse.
  • Ergonomic Fit: The ideal height should allow your feet to rest flat on the ground with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle, avoiding aๆ‚ฌ็ฉบ (hanging in the air) waist or pressure on the legs.
  • Regular Maintenance: After long-term use, check whether the adjustment components are loose and tighten or replace the accessories in a timely manner.
