Solutions for an Office Chair That's Too High

Admin October 10, 2026

If your office chair is too high, you can use the following methods to solve the problem, choosing the appropriate solution based on the type of chair:

I. Adjustment Methods for Height-Adjustable Office Chairs

  1. Standard Sitting Posture Calibration Method

    • Confirm the standard sitting posture: Keep your feet flat on the ground, your thighs parallel to the ground, your knees at a 90-degree angle, and leave a fist-sized gap (about 5 centimeters) between the back of your knees and the front edge of the seat cushion.
    • Operation steps: Sit on the chair, pull the lever or pull the handle downwards, use your body weight to lower the chair, and then lock the height after releasing it.
  2. Elbow Joint Adaptation Method

    • Adjustment principle: When your elbows hang naturally, the elbow joints should be at an angle of 90-110 degrees, and the desktop should be slightly lower than the height of the elbow joints.
    • Operation steps: Turn the lifting rod clockwise to raise it and counterclockwise to lower it until your feet are flat on the ground, your knees are bent at 90 degrees, and your thighs are parallel to the ground.

II. Solutions for Fixed-Height Office Chairs

  1. Replace the Gas Cylinder

    • Applicable scenarios: When the chair height exceeds the required height by a significant amount.
    • Operation steps:
      • Remove the old gas cylinder: Turn the chair upside down, use a slender tool to press the spring clip inside the base, and pull the rod upwards at the same time; if it is stuck, you can apply cooking oil for lubrication or lightly tap the connection with a hammer.
      • Install the new gas cylinder: Insert it vertically into the hole in the base. Do not use hammering, prying, or heating methods for disassembly.
  2. Install Adjustable Foot Pads

    • Applicable scenarios: When the chair is only a few millimeters to 1 centimeter too high.
    • Advantages: The foot pads have a threaded lifting design, which can precisely match the height requirements.
  3. Elevate Your Legs

    • Tool selection:
      • Special footrests: The height and angle can be adjusted, and they are easy to use.
      • Substitutes (such as shoe boxes): You need to repeatedly test the height, and the adaptability is poor.
  4. Place a Wooden Board Under the Seat

    • Operation points: Place a wooden board under the seat to raise your hips, and use a footstool to level it at the same time to avoid leaning forward.

III. Auxiliary Adjustment Suggestions

  1. Lumbar Support Optimization

    • For chairs with adjustable lumbar supports: Raise the height to align with the small of your back, and then adjust the front-back tightness.
    • For chairs with fixed lumbar supports: Place a 5-centimeter-thick supportive cushion.
    • For chairs without lumbar supports: Use a rolled-up towel secured with tape as a temporary substitute.
  2. Habit Coordination

    • Get up and move around regularly to avoid sitting for long periods; check if the desktop height matches the height of your elbow joints; choose an ergonomic chair.

Precautions: Long-term improper sitting posture may lead to chronic injuries such as lumbar disc herniation and cervical spondylosis. After adjustment, maintain a standard sitting posture and regularly check the condition of the equipment.
