Office Chair Height Adjustment

Admin October 22, 2026

The core basis for adjusting the height of an office chair is the seat height and its adjustment range, which should be selected comprehensively based on national standards, height adaptability, adjustment functions, and usage principles. Details are as follows:

1. National Standard Range
According to GB3326-1997 and GB/T 3976-2014, the seat height of an office chair should be controlled between 400 and 500 millimeters (40 to 50 centimeters), which is the benchmark for ensuring basic comfort and safety. Most mainstream products on the market typically support free adjustment within the range of 360 to 480 millimeters, covering the needs of most users. However, it is important to note whether the adjustment range includes the lowest setting (e.g., 360 millimeters) to accommodate shorter users.

2. Precise Adjustment Based on Height

  • Below 160 centimeters: It is recommended to adjust the seat height to the lowest setting (approximately 360 millimeters) to ensure that both feet are flat on the ground when seated, avoiding leg suspension due to a chair that is too high, which can increase lumbar pressure.
  • 160 to 165 centimeters: A recommended seat height of 42 to 43 centimeters allows the thighs and lower legs to naturally remain perpendicular, meeting ergonomic requirements.
  • 165 to 170 centimeters: A recommended seat height of 43 to 45 centimeters should be paired with a posture where the arms hang naturally and the elbows are bent at a 90-degree angle, reducing shoulder and neck fatigue.
  • Above 170 centimeters: A recommended seat height of 45 to 47 centimeters is suggested. If paired with a standard 75-centimeter desk, ensure that the height difference between the desk and chair is controlled within 28 to 32 centimeters to avoid bending or shrugging due to mismatched heights.

3. Adjustment Functions and Safety

  • Pneumatic Rod Adjustment Range: Mainstream products typically offer a pneumatic rod adjustment range of over 10 centimeters, allowing flexible adaptation to different height requirements. However, it is important to confirm that the adjustment is smooth and free of jams.
  • Pneumatic Rod Grade: Prioritize choosing a Grade 4 pneumatic rod (with a load capacity of 300 kilograms), which is significantly safer than a Grade 3 pneumatic rod (with a 17 times lower explosion probability). This can be confirmed by checking product certification marks (such as BIFMA and SGS).

4. Key Usage Principles

  • Feet Flat on the Ground: When seated, ensure that both feet are fully in contact with the ground, with the thighs and lower legs at a 90-degree angle, to avoid obstructing blood circulation in the legs.
  • Desk-Chair Height Matching: If the chair is too high, adjust the desk height or use a footrest to compensate; if it is too low, raise the seat or replace the chair to prevent excessive lumbar lordosis.

Properly adjusting the height of an office chair can significantly enhance comfort during prolonged sitting and reduce the risk of lumbar spine diseases. It is recommended to regularly check and adjust the height based on height and usage scenarios.
