Office Chair Height Adjustment
Admin October 17, 2026
Here are the methods for adjusting the height of an office chair:

I. Adjustment Methods for Lifting Chairs
- Operating the Control Device: When seated, look for the hand-operated lever or knob. Most chairs adjust their height by pulling up the lever, while some models require turning the knob. If unsure, read the instructions or try each lever one by one.
- Adjusting to a Comfortable Height: Operate gently, moving a few centimeters at a time to avoid rapid lifting or lowering. After adjustment, return the lever to its original position. Some pneumatic models require repeated pumping of the lever (pumping action) to achieve height adjustment.
- Standing Position for Assistance: If adjusting while seated is difficult, try standing. Adjust the seat height so that the front edge is just below the knees, ensuring feet are flat on the ground when seated.
II. Selecting the Appropriate Height Based on Tasks
- Computer Work: Keep your eyes level with the monitor. If the monitor height is not adjustable, adjust the seat height to match your line of sight, avoiding neck strain from looking down or up.
- Desk Work: Adjust the chair height so that your elbows are level with the desk, reducing shoulder and neck pressure.
- Prolonged Sitting: Ensure feet are flat on the ground with thighs and lower legs at a 90-degree angle. If the chair is too high, use a footrest to support your feet.
III. Safety and Comfort Optimization
- Armrest Adjustment: If the chair has armrests, adjust them to match the desk height. When not needed, remove or lower the armrests to avoid obstructing knee movement under the desk.
- Dynamic Sitting Posture: Change your sitting posture every 15-30 minutes, such as briefly leaning forward and then returning to an upright position, or adjusting your body's center of gravity to relieve muscle fatigue.
- Footrest Use: When the chair is too high, place a footrest under the desk to keep feet flat and avoid leg suspension.
IV. Adjustment Standard References
- National Standards: According to GB3326-1997, the seat height should be between 400-440 mm, with mainstream products adjustable from 360-480 mm; GB/T 3976-2014 specifies an adult office chair height of 40-50 cm.
- Height Adaptation:
- Under 160 cm: Recommended minimum height of 360 mm.
- 160 cm: 42-43 cm.
- 165 cm: 43-45 cm.
- 170 cm: 45-47 cm.
- Over 180 cm: When paired with a standard 75 cm desk, ensure thighs are parallel to the ground, elbows bent at 90 degrees, and a desk-chair height difference of 28-32 cm.
Adjustments should follow the principle of "feet flat on the ground, thighs and lower legs perpendicular, and desk level with elbows" to ensure ergonomic compliance.
