Adjusting the Height of an Office Chair

Admin October 16, 2026

The method for adjusting the height of an office chair depends on the type of chair. Here are common types and their operations:

I. Adjustable Chairs (Pneumatic or Mechanical)

  1. Locate the Control Mechanism

    • Most adjustable chairs are equipped with a hand control lever or knob, typically located on the right side beneath the seat. For pneumatic chairs, the lever may be metallic; for mechanical chairs, it may be a plastic knob.
    • Operation Method:
      • Pneumatic: After sitting firmly, pull up the control lever, and the seat will rise slowly with the air pressure; to lower it, keep the lever pulled up while pressing down on the seat with your body weight, or repeatedly pump the lever (push up and down) to adjust the height.
      • Mechanical: Turn the knob or pull the lever, and the seat will gradually rise or lower; continue operating until reaching the desired height.
    • Precautions: When adjusting, avoid moving too much at once (it is recommended to move 2-3 centimeters each time) to prevent damage to the air pressure rod due to rapid lifting. If unsure about the operation method, refer to the chair's accompanying instruction manual or try each lever function individually.
  2. Standing Posture Adjustment Method

    • If adjusting while seated is difficult, stand in front of the chair and align the front of the chair with just below your knees (about 1-2 centimeters). When you sit down, your feet should be flat on the ground, and your thighs parallel to the ground.
    • This method is suitable for pneumatic chairs, using body weight to assist in positioning the height and ensuring comfort after adjustment.

II. Electric Office Chairs

  1. Electric Button Adjustment
    • Electric chairs usually have buttons on the side or bottom of the seat, marked with up and down arrow indicators. Press the "up" button to raise the seat automatically; press the "down" button to lower it.
    • Precautions: Maintain a stable sitting posture during adjustment to avoid sudden movements causing the motor to jam. If the buttons do not respond, first check if the power is connected (e.g., if the plug is loose or the battery is dead), then contact after-sales service for repair; do not disassemble the motor yourself.

III. Old Fixed-Height Chairs

  1. Install Adjustment Devices

    • If the chair is purely fixed (without an air pressure rod or motor), contact a professional furniture repair shop to install an adjustable base at the bottom of the chair legs (such as a screw-type lifting foot or hydraulic lifting kit).
    • Cost and Risk: The modification cost is approximately 50-200 yuan. Ensure that the chair remains stable after modification to avoid tipping risks.
  2. Directly Replace with a New Chair

    • If the chair has been in use for a long time (over 5 years) or the structure is aging, it is recommended to replace it with a new ergonomic chair. When selecting, pay attention to the chair's maximum weight capacity, air pressure rod certification level (e.g., passing BIFMA standards), and adjustment functions (such as adjustable headrest and lumbar support).

Summary: Prioritize adjusting the height using the chair's built-in adjustment functions. For electric chairs, check the power supply; for fixed chairs, consider modification or replacement. After adjustment, test for comfort, ensuring your feet are flat on the ground and your thighs are parallel to the ground to reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting.
