Office Chair Height Adjustment
The methods for raising an office chair vary depending on its type and design. Here are some common approaches:

I. Lifting Chairs
Lifting chairs are usually equipped with pneumatic devices or mechanical structures. To adjust the height, you need to locate the hand control. For pneumatic models, the operation is as follows: When you leave the chair or lift your body, pull the control lever upward, and the chair will slowly rise. To lower it, sit on the chair and push the control lever downward, relying on your body weight to make the chair descend. Release the lever to fix the height. For some seat models, you may need to pull the lever upward to raise the seat and press it downward to lower it. Mechanical-structure lifting chairs usually adjust the height by rotating the knob or adjustment rod under the seat, and you need to operate according to the specific design.
II. Swivel Chairs
The height adjustment methods for swivel chairs vary based on their design:
- With a handle under the seat: When adjusting the height of an armchair, lift the handle upward. The high-pressure gas inside the air rod will rebound after being compressed, and the seat will naturally rise. To lower the armchair, turn the handle upward. When you lift your hand and sit on the chair, the rebound of the high-pressure air in the air rod is blocked, and the chair will naturally lower.
- With fixed screws at the bottom: Simply loosen the screws, adjust to the desired height, and then refasten them.
- With two adjustment rods under the seat: One is for up and down adjustment, and the other is for left and right adjustment. You can sit on the seat and perform up and down adjustments. Lift the handle, and release it when the height reaches your satisfaction.
III. Handling Special Cases
If the chair cannot be raised high enough or feels too short when sitting, first determine the type of chair:
- Modern lifting chairs: If the chair sinks when you sit on it or cannot be raised when you pull the lever, there may be issues with the pneumatic rod (such as internal gas leakage or damage, requiring a replacement pneumatic rod), the locking mechanism (check if the locking mechanism at the bottom of the chair is too tight or stuck, and try to adjust it to restore normal function), or loose connectors (check if all screws and bolts are loose and tighten them).
- Emergency fixing method: If you do not want to replace the pneumatic rod temporarily, you can remove the fixed retaining ring, find a suitable length of PPR pipe, and slip it over the pneumatic rod as a support. Then, reinstall the retaining ring. However, the chair will no longer be adjustable in height afterward.
- Non-adjustable chairs: For old-fashioned four-legged wooden chairs or fixed-height dining chairs, you can use special heightening pads (purchase rubber or plastic chair foot heightening pads, directly slip them over or stick them to the bottom of the chair feet. They can stably raise the chair height by 2 - 5 centimeters and also have anti-slip and noise-reduction advantages), make your own heightening devices (use materials at hand, such as cutting suitable wooden blocks or thick fabric wrappers, fix them to the chair feet and tie them tightly with ropes. Ensure that the heightening devices are firm and stable to prevent the chair from tipping over), or replace the chair (if the above methods are not effective or affect safety during use).
