Adjusting the Height of a High Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

When an office chair is too high, solutions include adjusting the height, matching it to task requirements, enhancing safety and comfort, and using a footrest if height adjustment is not possible.

Adjusting the Height of the Office Chair

Most mainstream office chairs are equipped with gas springs, allowing for an adjustment range of approximately 10 centimeters. To adjust, first locate the hand control device, typically a lever or knob. Pull up the lever or turn the knob, moving a few centimeters at a time, and return the lever to its original position once the desired comfortable height is reached. For some models, you may need to pull the lever upward to raise the seat and press it downward to lower it. For gas spring models, repeated up-and-down lever movements can achieve height adjustment. If adjusting from a seated position is difficult, try standing to adjust so that the front of the chair is just below your knees.

Choosing the Appropriate Height Based on Tasks

  • When working on a computer: Keep your eyes level with the monitor. If the monitor height cannot be adjusted, adjust the seat height to avoid prolonged neck strain from looking up or down.
  • When working at a desk: Keep your elbows at desk height, allowing your arms to hang naturally, reducing tension in your shoulder and arm muscles and improving work efficiency.
  • When sitting for long periods: Ensure your feet rest flat on the floor. Adjust the chair height until your feet naturally touch the ground, with your thighs and calves at a right angle, promoting blood circulation and reducing leg fatigue.

Enhancing Safety and Comfort

  • Adjusting armrests: If the chair has armrests, adjust their height according to your needs. When arm support is not required, remove the armrests or lower them to prevent them from obstructing your knees as you slide under the desk.
  • Changing posture regularly: Change your sitting posture every 15 to 30 minutes, such as briefly leaning forward and then sitting up straight again, or slightly shifting your body's center of gravity to relieve localized pressure on your body.
  • Using a footrest: If the chair is too high and cannot be adjusted, prepare a footrest. Slide the footrest under the desk and place your feet on it to keep them flat and maintain body balance and comfort.

Height Recommendations Based on Body Height

For individuals who are 160 centimeters tall, it is recommended to adjust the office chair to a height of 42 to 43 centimeters; for those who are 165 centimeters tall, a height of 43 to 45 centimeters is suitable; and for those who are 170 centimeters tall, a height of 45 to 47 centimeters is ideal. Additionally, the desk height should ideally be level with your elbows, with a height difference between the desk and chair controlled within the range of 280 to 320 millimeters.
