Office Chair Height Adjustment

Admin October 08, 2026

Excessive height of office chairs can have adverse effects on human health, and it is necessary to adjust the seat height reasonably according to height and usage scenarios. The specific impacts and adjustment suggestions are as follows:

1. Health Risks of Excessive Office Chair Height When an office chair is too high, causing the feet to hang in the air, the knee joints will be in a "semi-flexed suspended state" for a long time. This posture can cause the muscles on the front of the thighs to contract passively due to a lack of support, potentially leading to muscle atrophy over time. At the same time, the ligaments around the knee joints become loose due to continuous stretching, resulting in an imbalance in joint forces and reduced stability. If not corrected promptly, it may increase the risk of degenerative joint diseases (such as osteoarthritis) and be accompanied by compensatory forward leaning of the waist, further leading to problems such as lumbar muscle strain or lumbar disc herniation.

2. Reasonable Height Range of Office Chairs According to the national standard GB3326-1997, the seat height of office chairs should be controlled between 400 and 440 millimeters, while mainstream products on the market usually support free adjustment between 360 and 480 millimeters. This range can cover the physiological needs of most people, but further optimization is required based on specific height and usage scenarios.

3. Adjustment Suggestions for People of Different Heights

  • Short people under 160 centimeters: It is recommended to adjust the seat height to the lowest setting (about 360 millimeters) to ensure that the feet are flat on the ground and avoid hanging in the air. If paired with a standard desk (about 75 centimeters high), check whether the thighs are parallel to the ground and whether the elbows are bent at a 90-degree angle when bent naturally to reduce shoulder and neck pressure.
  • Tall people over 180 centimeters: When using a standard 75-centimeter desk, ensure that the thighs are parallel to the ground and the elbows are bent at a 90-degree angle. At this time, the height difference between the desk and the chair should be controlled between 28 and 32 centimeters. If the adjustment range of the chair is insufficient, it can be compensated by adding adjustable footrests or replacing it with a higher desk.

4. Verification Method after Adjustment After adjusting the seat height, the following criteria can be used to verify its reasonableness:

  • The feet are flat on the ground, and the knees and hip joints are basically level;
  • The back naturally fits against the backrest, and the waist is supported;
  • When the elbows are bent at a 90-degree angle, the forearms are parallel to the desktop, and the wrists are not suspended or compressed.

Reasonable adjustment of the office chair height is a key measure to prevent musculoskeletal injuries. It is recommended to check regularly and make fine adjustments according to body feedback to maintain a healthy sitting posture.
