Office Chair Height

Admin October 10, 2026

The standard height range for office chairs is 40-50 centimeters, with common heights for adult chairs being 400-500mm. Specific adjustments should be made based on the user's gender, calf height, and the height difference between the desk and chair.

I. National Standards and Common Adjustment Benchmarks

According to national standards, the seat height range for office chairs is 40-50 centimeters, which can meet the needs of most adults. Among them, the actual heights of adult chairs are mostly concentrated within the 400-500mm (i.e., 40-50 centimeters) range. When making specific adjustments, male users often take 43 centimeters as the benchmark, while female users take 41 centimeters as the benchmark. This difference mainly stems from the different average heights and lower limb lengths of men and women.

II. Core Principles for Height Adjustment

The design of chair height should take the user's calf height as a key reference. Ideally, when sitting down, the feet should be able to rest firmly on the ground, with the thighs and calves forming a right angle (approximately 90 degrees), and there should be about 5 centimeters of space behind the knees. This design can avoid pressure on the legs, promote blood circulation, and reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting. If the chair height is too high, the feet will be left hanging, increasing the burden on the leg muscles; if it is too low, it may compress the blood vessels at the back of the thighs, causing numbness.

III. Synergistic Requirements for the Height Difference Between the Desk and Chair

The height of the office chair needs to match the height of the desk to form a reasonable height difference between the desk and chair. National standards recommend that the height difference between the desk and chair should be controlled within the range of 280-320mm. For example, if the desk height is 75 centimeters, the chair height should be adjusted to 45-47 centimeters (750mm - 450mm = 300mm, which is within the difference range). This difference can ensure that the user maintains a natural sitting posture, that is, when the arms are placed flat on the desk, the elbows are bent at a 90-degree angle, avoiding stiffness in the shoulders, neck, or wrists due to inappropriate height.

IV. Adjustment Suggestions for Special Scenarios

For users who are taller or shorter, the chair height can be further optimized through adjustable gas rods or adding footrests. For example, users taller than 185cm can adjust the chair height to the upper limit of 50 centimeters and use a footrest to support their feet; users shorter than 160cm can adjust the chair height to the lower limit of 40 centimeters and lower the desk height or use an adjustable-height desk. In addition, children or adolescents need to choose dedicated study chairs, whose height range is usually lower (35-45 centimeters) to accommodate their growth and development characteristics.
