Office Chair Height
Admin October 09, 2026
The standard height of an office chair typically ranges from 40 to 50 centimeters, with specific adjustments needing to consider height, sitting posture, and the match between the desk and chair.

I. National Standards and Mainstream Product Ranges
According to GB/T 3976-2014, the height of an adult office chair should be within the range of 40 to 50 centimeters; GB3326-1997 further specifies that the seat height should be between 400 and 440 millimeters (i.e., 40 to 44 centimeters). Most mainstream products on the market adopt a pneumatic rod design, supporting free adjustment from 360 to 480 millimeters (36 to 48 centimeters) to accommodate different height requirements.
II. Height and Chair Height Recommendations
- People under 160 centimeters: It is recommended to adjust the chair height to a minimum of 360 millimeters to ensure that both feet are flat on the ground or on a footrest, avoiding circulation issues caused by hanging feet.
- People between 160 and 165 centimeters: A chair height of 42 to 43 centimeters is recommended, allowing the thighs to be parallel to the ground and the knees to bend at approximately 90 degrees when seated.
- People between 165 and 170 centimeters: A chair height of 43 to 45 centimeters is suitable, maintaining a natural sitting posture and reducing pressure on the lower back.
- People between 170 and 180 centimeters: A chair height of 45 to 47 centimeters is recommended, ensuring that when the elbows are bent at 90 degrees, the forearms are parallel to the desktop.
- People over 180 centimeters: If paired with a standard 75-centimeter desk, adjust the chair height so that the thighs are parallel to the ground, and use a footrest to help keep both feet flat.
III. Adjustment Principles and Comfort Optimization
- Dynamic Adjustment: Office chairs must have a height adjustment function, with pneumatic rods being the mainstream choice, allowing for stepless adjustment to match individual differences.
- Sitting Posture Standards: The correct chair height should meet three conditions: thighs parallel to the ground, knees bent at 90 degrees, and both feet flat on the ground, avoiding lumbar or cervical spine pressure caused by improper chair height.
- Desk-Chair Height Difference: It is recommended to be controlled between 28 and 32 centimeters. If the chair height is too high, it can be compensated for by raising the desktop or using an adjustable footrest; if the chair height is too low, the desktop should be lowered or a taller chair should be used.
IV. Special Scenario Considerations
- Short people: If the chair height cannot be adjusted below 360 millimeters, it can be resolved by using a thicker footrest or choosing a low-profile office chair.
- Tall people: It is necessary to prioritize products with a wider range of chair height adjustments and ensure that the backrest height can support up to the scapula position, avoiding a hollow lower back.
- Long hours of office work: It is recommended to slightly adjust the chair height or get up and move every 30 minutes to relieve muscle fatigue.
