Office Chair Height

Admin October 08, 2026

The standard height of an office chair generally ranges from 40 to 50 centimeters, with mainstream products on the market allowing free adjustment from 36 to 48 centimeters. The specific height should be adjusted according to ergonomics and actual needs.

Standard Height Range for Office Chairs

According to the provisions of GB/T 3976-2014, the height of an adult office chair should be within the range of 40 to 50 centimeters. This data is calculated based on ergonomics to ensure that most users can maintain a comfortable sitting posture. Some sources indicate that the standard sitting height of an office chair is 40 to 44 centimeters, while mainstream products on the market achieve free adjustment from 360 to 480 millimeters (i.e., 36 to 48 centimeters) through pneumatic rods or mechanical structures to accommodate different heights and usage scenarios.

Adjustment Methods and Operating Steps

  1. Pneumatic Rod Adjustment: If there is a handle under the chair seat, lifting the handle upwards compresses the high-pressure gas inside the pneumatic rod, causing the seat to rise. To lower the height, turn the handle upwards, lift your body and sit on the chair, preventing the rebound of the high-pressure air in the pneumatic rod, and the chair will descend.
  2. Fixed Screw Adjustment: If the swivel chair has a fixed screw at the bottom, loosen the screw first, adjust it to the appropriate height, and then refasten it.
  3. Dual Adjustment Rod Design: For swivel chairs with two adjustment rods under the seat, one is used to adjust the up-and-down height, and the other is used to adjust the left-and-right position. When using, sit on the seat, lift the handle for up-and-down adjustment, and release it when reaching the desired height.
  4. Dual Handle Design: If the chair has two handles at the bottom, one adjusts the chair height, and the other adjusts the backrest angle. If unsure which one adjusts the height, try operating and observing the reaction, and then adjust according to the above methods.

Precautions for Height Adjustment

When adjusting the height of an office chair, it is necessary to consider the height of the office desk and your own height:

  • Visual Comfort: When sitting, your eyes should be level with the computer screen to avoid sinking too low into the chair or causing eye strain from being too high.
  • Standard Sitting Posture: Ensure that you can sit upright and maintain a good sitting posture. Different heights have corresponding ideal seat heights: for people who are 160 centimeters tall, it is recommended to adjust to 42 to 43 centimeters; for those who are 165 centimeters tall, 43 to 45 centimeters is suitable; and for those who are 170 centimeters tall, it is best to adjust to 45 to 47 centimeters. When sitting, your feet should be able to rest flat on the ground, with your thighs and calves perpendicular to each other.
  • Desk-Chair Matching: The desktop height should preferably be level with your elbows, with a height difference between the desk and chair controlled within 28 to 32 centimeters. For short individuals under 160 centimeters, it is recommended to adjust to a minimum of 360 millimeters. For tall individuals over 180 centimeters paired with a standard 75-centimeter desk, ensure that your thighs are parallel to the ground and your elbows are bent at a 90-degree angle.
