Heavy Lifting of Office Chair

Admin October 22, 2026

The heavy lifting of an office chair may be caused by factors such as the gas spring, operating mechanism, lubrication, and usage environment. It can be resolved by troubleshooting component issues or seeking professional repair.

Gas Spring Issues

The gas spring is the core component that enables the lifting function of an office chair. If the internal seals age, it can lead to a decrease in sealing performance, nitrogen leakage, and insufficient internal pressure in the gas spring. Additionally, wear on the piston rod can also affect its normal operation, all of which will require greater external force to make the office chair descend slowly. When gas spring issues are suspected, do not disassemble it yourself. Instead, contact the manufacturer or a professional repair technician to replace the gas spring.

Stuck Operating Mechanism

The linkage structures of the lifting handle or foot pedal, such as springs and connecting rods, if they become rusty or deformed, or if the connection points with the base or seat become loose, will increase operating resistance and thus affect the smoothness of the office chair's lifting. You can inspect the operating mechanism to check if the handle or foot pedal is loose or deformed, and if the linkage components have any obvious rust. If rust is found, try applying a small amount of lubricating oil to the moving parts to see if it improves the lifting effort.

Insufficient Lubrication

If the connecting bushings between the gas spring and the seat or base, as well as the moving parts of the operating mechanism, lack lubrication, it will increase frictional resistance, requiring more effort to lift or lower the office chair. In such cases, you can also try applying a small amount of lubricating oil to these parts to reduce friction and make lifting easier.

Load or Environmental Impact

Long-term overloading of the office chair, i.e., exceeding the rated load capacity of the gas spring, or using it in a humid or dusty environment, may accelerate component aging and thus cause lifting difficulties. Therefore, when using an office chair, avoid overloading and try to keep the usage environment dry and clean to extend the chair's lifespan.
