Health Risks of Office Chairs
Admin October 09, 2026
The unhealthy aspects of office chairs are mainly reflected in two aspects: safety hazards and health threats, as detailed below:

Safety Hazards
- Component Failure Risks: There have been multiple recalls of office chairs in the market, primarily due to issues such as backrest breakage and bolt failure. These component failures can directly cause users to fall and sustain injuries. According to a spot check by the State Administration for Market Regulation, out of 90 batches of products from 90 enterprises across 11 provinces and municipalities, 21 batches were found to be unqualified, with a non-compliance rate of 23.3%. Unqualified products may have issues such as base breakage and caster detachment, which can lead to fall accidents.
- Explosion Risks: Poor-quality gas springs are a major hazard. Thin walls of the gas spring, impure inert gases (or even the use of compressed air as a substitute), or excessive heat generated by frequent seat adjustments can all trigger explosions. Some products lack explosion-proof steel plates, which are unable to prevent the gas spring from exploding and piercing the seat surface, directly threatening human safety.
- Insufficient Structural Strength: The five-star base of office chairs may have thin walls and poor strength, which can break during daily use, causing users to fall and sustain injuries. Such issues are particularly common in low-priced or informally sourced products.
- Excessive Formaldehyde: Poor-quality office chairs may release excessive amounts of formaldehyde. Long-term exposure to low concentrations can cause dizziness and fatigue; high concentrations of formaldehyde are highly irritating and can damage the nervous system, immune system, and liver function.
Health Threats
- General Risks of Prolonged Sitting: Sitting for extended periods day after day is inherently a health hazard. When standing, the lumbar spine bears approximately 100 kilograms of pressure, but this can soar to 180 kilograms with incorrect sitting posture, leading to long-term overload of the cervical spine and potential issues. Over 65% of office workers are currently suffering from lumbar spine problems, which are closely related to the unreasonable design and lack of support in office chairs.
- Sitting Posture and Pressure Distribution: Poor-quality office chairs fail to provide sufficient lumbar support, disrupting the natural curve of the spine and causing continuous muscle tension, which accelerates lumbar degenerative changes. Additionally, unreasonable seat height, depth, or tilt can force users to adopt twisted postures, further increasing the burden on the cervical and lumbar spines.
