Office Chair Headrest Falls Off

Admin October 11, 2026

If the headrest of an office chair falls off, you can follow these steps to handle it:

I. Removal and Inspection

If you need to remove the headrest first, usually locate the fixing screws of the headrest (there are generally 2, located on the left and right sides of the headrest respectively). Use a screwdriver or wrench to slowly loosen and remove the headrest. At the same time, check the reason for the headrest falling off. Common reasons include loose fixing screws, worn plastic buckles, or a lack of lubrication in the moving parts, etc..

II. Repair Treatment

  • Tightening the Screws: If it is a screw-fixed headrest, use an appropriate screwdriver to pry open the decorative cover at the connection point, find the fixing screws and tighten them clockwise. If the screw holes are worn, take a toothpick, dip it in white glue, and insert it into the screw holes to fill the gaps. After the glue dries completely, tighten the screws again. White glue can fill the worn gaps and enhance the fixing effect of the screws.
  • Repairing the Buckles: If the lifting buckle is damaged and the headrest cannot be locked, first remove the buckle. Locate the adjustment button or snap spring at the bottom of the headrest rod. Press or pull it while pulling the entire headrest upwards with force to check the plastic buckle parts on the rod. If they are broken or deformed, use pliers or a screwdriver to remove them and replace them with new buckles of the same model. If the buckles are not broken but just loose, drop a few drops of 502 glue at the gap where the headrest rod contacts the iron tube of the buckle. Drop glue in all four directions and let it sit until the glue is completely dry and cured. 502 glue can enhance the connection stability between the buckles and the iron tube.
  • Lubrication Treatment: If there are no problems with the screws and buckles, but the lifting is stiff and there is a 'creaking' sound, apply a small amount of dry silicone grease lubricant at the connection between the headrest rod and the support. Dry silicone grease lubricant can reduce friction and eliminate abnormal noises.

III. Reinstallation

Confirm the model and installation method of the office chair headrest. You can check the product manual or contact after-sales customer service for consultation. Prepare tools such as a screwdriver, wrench, and pliers. Place the headrest on the back of the chair and adjust its position. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws on the headrest (it is recommended to lay a cloth to prevent the screws from being lost). Slowly remove the headrest and the buckle sleeve by hand, reinstall the buckle sleeve and the headrest, first fix the screws in the corresponding holes, and then tighten the screws with a screwdriver. After confirming that the installation is stable, adjust the height and angle of the headrest and test whether it meets the requirements. When installing, pay attention to following the instructions in the product manual. Apply appropriate force when tightening the screws but do not overdo it. After installation, conduct a test and make appropriate adjustments.
