Disassembly of Office Chair Headrest
Admin October 16, 2026
The disassembly of an office chair headrest requires selecting the appropriate method based on its fixing mechanism. Here are the common types and their operational steps:

1. Snap-button Fixing
- Locate the Unlock Point: Examine the connection between the headrest support and the backrest, where buttons, levers, or snap mechanisms are typically located on the sides, bottom, or top of the backrest. Some designs may be hidden under fabric or plastic covers, requiring gentle pressing or pulling to uncover them.
- Operational Steps: Press and hold the unlock button or pry open the snap mechanism while keeping it pressed. Use your other hand to grasp both sides of the headrest and pull it straight up evenly. If there is significant resistance, adjust the backrest to a reclined angle (approximately 45ยฐ-60ยฐ) to change the direction of the snap's force and reduce friction. Note: Avoid pulling diagonally to prevent deformation of the support.
2. Pin/Screw Fixing
- Check the Fixing Points: If there are exposed screw heads at the base of the headrest support or the top of the backrest, select the appropriate screwdriver based on the screw type (e.g., Phillips or flat-head). If it is a pin, first pull the headrest up by 1-2 centimeters to expose the pin hole.
- Operational Steps:
- Screw Fixing: Turn the screw counterclockwise until it is completely detached. For some models, you may need to invert the chair and use a wrench to remove the fixing screws on the inside of the backrest, then use a torque wrench to remove the nut.
- Pin Fixing: Insert needle-nose pliers or a slender tool into the pin hole and gently pull the pin outward, then pull the headrest straight up. Tip: If the screws are rusty, spray a small amount of rust remover to assist in disassembly.
3. Velcro Fixing
- Operational Steps: The back of the headrest is attached to the backrest with Velcro. Simply grasp both sides of the headrest with your hands and slowly and evenly peel off the Velcro. Note: Some Velcro may have strong adhesion, so avoid pulling too hard to prevent tearing of the fabric.
4. Hidden Fixing (Requires Removing the Back Lining)
- Loosen the Back Lining: Adjust the backrest to its maximum reclined angle. Use your hands to feel for the snaps or Velcro that secure the back lining at the bottom of the chair back, and gently press or peel them apart to separate the lining.
- Locate the Lock Mechanism: Insert your hand through the gap between the lining and the chair, and feel for the wire spring or horizontal bar (usually located below the headrest support). Use your fingers or a tool to pull it to open the headrest lock.
- Remove the Headrest: Once the lock is released, pull the headrest straight up. If the lining is too tight, use a plastic pry bar to assist in separation, avoiding scratches on the surface.
General Precautions
- Safe Operation: Lock the chair wheels before disassembly to prevent sliding; avoid bumping the headrest against walls or the front seat to prevent plastic parts from breaking.
- Special Designs: Some brands (e.g., Herman Miller, Steelcase) may use proprietary structures, requiring you to consult the product manual or contact after-sales service.
- Reassembly Testing: If reassembly is required after disassembly, ensure that the snaps, screws, or pins are fully seated to prevent the headrest from becoming loose.
