Hazards of Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

The hazards of office chairs are mainly reflected in four aspects: explosion risks, component failures, special hazards to children, and health threats from prolonged sitting.

Explosion Risks: Poor-quality gas cylinders are the primary cause of explosions. Pneumatic swivel chairs use the pressure difference of inert gases within gas springs (gas cylinders) to achieve height adjustment. However, some gas cylinders have overly thin walls, impure inert gases, or even use compressed air as a substitute. Frequent height adjustments leading to increased temperatures can trigger explosions. For example, in 2013, a woman was pierced by a steel column from an exploding swivel chair; in 2017, an office chair explosion in Anhui destroyed a computer tower; and in 2009, a boy in Shandong died after an office chair explosion despite rescue efforts. Additionally, the absence of explosion-proof steel plates exacerbates the hazards. Some non-compliant products fail safety tests due to the lack of explosion-proof steel plates with a thickness of โ‰ฅ2 millimeters.

Component Failures Leading to Falls and Injuries: Failures such as backrest breakage or bolt failure in office chairs can directly cause users to fall. There have been multiple recall incidents in the market, with a cumulative total of 19 reported injury cases caused by component failures. Although these failures may seem minor, they can lead to serious consequences.

Special Hazards to Children: Office chairs are designed based on adult ergonomics, posing multiple risks to children. Firstly, the chairs are too tall, causing children's feet to not reach the ground, making them prone to falling and sustaining head injuries when their bodies sway. Secondly, chairs with wheels can slide easily, leading children to bump into table corners, door frames, or even tip backward. Thirdly, poor-quality gas cylinders may burst under severe impact, and children, being lighter and having poor force control, face greater risks. Fourthly, oversized chairs can lead to poor sitting postures in children, such as hunching due to lack of lumbar support, sitting askew, or having their thighs compressed by the chair edge when their feet are off the ground, affecting blood circulation.

Health Threats from Prolonged Sitting: Prolonged sitting is a common health hazard. When standing, the lumbar spine experiences a pressure of about 100 kilograms, but this pressure soars to 180 kilograms with incorrect sitting postures. Long-term overload can lead to cervical and lumbar spine problems. Data shows that over 65% of office workers are troubled by lumbar spine issues, closely related to prolonged sitting behavior.
