Office Chair Has Cigarette Smell

Admin October 22, 2026

The following methods can be used to remove the cigarette smell from an office chair:

Ventilation

Place the office chair in a well-ventilated area. Create a cross-breeze by opening windows on opposite sides to accelerate air circulation and carry away some of the free cigarette smell molecules. This method is suitable for cases where the smell is relatively light. It is simple to operate and requires no additional cost. However, be careful to avoid leaving the windows open for a long time in humid or extreme weather conditions to prevent the office chair from getting damp or damaged.

Use Natural Adsorbents

Place sufficient activated carbon bags or bamboo charcoal bags around and under the office chair. Utilize their porous structures to effectively adsorb odors. Regularly (e.g., monthly) take the charcoal bags out and expose them to the sun to restore some of their adsorptive capacity, or directly replace them with new ones. This method is environmentally friendly and safe, but the adsorptive effect will gradually weaken over time, requiring continuous maintenance.

Try Household Materials for Neutralization

  • Leather office chairs: Sprinkle baking soda evenly on the surface, let it sit for several hours, and then thoroughly vacuum it up. Use its adsorptive properties to capture odors. You can also lightly spray a diluted white vinegar solution (with a vinegar-to-water ratio of about 1:10) on an inconspicuous area for testing. After confirming that there is no fading, spray it on the entire chair. Acetic acid helps neutralize alkaline cigarette smell substances. Never mix multiple chemical cleaners, as this may produce harmful gases or damage the leather.
  • Fabric office chairs: Baking soda is also applicable, but be sure to thoroughly clean up any remaining powder after vacuuming to avoid secondary pollution.

Deep Cleaning

  • Leather office chairs: Before cleaning, test whether the cleaner causes fading in an inconspicuous area. For daily cleaning, use a damp cloth to wipe. For stubborn stains, use a mild cleaner with a neutral or slightly weak pH. For penetrated cigarette smells, it is recommended to use a special leather cleaning and care agent. Dip a soft cloth into the cleaner and wipe the entire chair thoroughly, paying special attention to the seams. After cleaning and complete drying, apply a special leather protective fluid to the leather seat to form a protective film on the surface and reduce the future penetration of dirt and odors.
  • Fabric office chairs: Use a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool to thoroughly clean the surface of the seat and all folds and seams, removing dust and some attached substances. Choose a professional fabric cleaner containing decomposing ingredients such as plant polyphenols and active enzymes. Be sure to read the instructions before spraying and test it in a hidden area. Evenly spray the cleaner on the seat and let it sit for the specified time to allow the stains and odor molecules to detach from the fibers. For seats with a severe cigarette smell, gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush or use a steam cleaner or fabric cleaner for deep extraction. After cleaning, make sure the seat is completely dry. You can place it in a well-ventilated area to dry naturally or use a fan or dehumidifier to speed up the process to prevent the growth of mold inside due to moisture, which can produce new odors.

Other Methods

Place orange peels or green tea leaves near the office chair to use their natural fragrances to mask or adsorb odors. You can also use special odor-removing products such as charcoal bags and deodorizers, but be sure to choose reputable brands to avoid secondary pollution caused by using inferior products.
