Office Chair Has Bugs

Admin October 11, 2026

When there are bugs in an office chair, it is necessary to first identify the type of pest, then take targeted measures to deal with it, and at the same time, carry out environmental management and prevention.

Pest Type Identification

  • Wooden Office Chairs: Common pests are woodworms or termites. Signs include fine wood shavings on the chair surface or floor, and pinhead-sized holes in the wood.
  • Fabric Office Chairs: These may be infested with powder mites, body lice, or bedbugs. In public places, if moving black dots or bite marks are found on fabric chairs, be alert for lice or bedbugs.

Targeted Treatment Measures

  • Wooden Office Chairs
    • Physical Removal: Use a vacuum cleaner to clean wood shavings and eggs from the chair's crevices and corners. Small detachable parts can be placed in sealed bags and frozen in the refrigerator for 48 hours.
    • High-Temperature Elimination: Use a hairdryer on the high-temperature setting to blow on the worm-eaten areas for 15 minutes, raising the surface temperature to above 60ยฐC. On sunny days, expose the chair to the sun for 6 - 8 hours, turning it every 2 hours.
    • Chemical Treatment: Drip a small amount of dichlorvos solution into the worm-eaten holes, or stuff them with chili peppers or Sichuan pepper powder. For severe infestations, use specialized wood preservatives such as BHC emulsion to brush or block the wormholes and then seal them for fumigation. Ensure good ventilation and personal protection during application. Do not use insecticides or paraffin oil in cabinets storing tableware.
  • Fabric Office Chairs (Taking Bedbugs as an Example)
    • Physical Disinfection: Soak and wash contaminated fabrics in hot water above 60ยฐC, then dry them at high temperatures or expose them to the sun. Use a high-temperature steam cleaner to fumigate the crevices of tables and chairs and the dead corners of sofas. Seal small office stationery and freeze or expose it to the sun.
    • Deep Vacuuming: Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to thoroughly clean the area. Seal and discard the dust bag after vacuuming.
    • Chemical Disinfection (Used as an auxiliary measure when the pest infestation is severe): Select compliant chemicals and spray them in a dotted pattern in hidden areas, avoiding daily contact areas. After application, close the doors and windows for 2 hours and ensure adequate ventilation to dissipate the odor.

Environmental Management and Long-Term Prevention of Recurrence

  • Seal wall cracks and furniture joints with silicone sealant.
  • Promptly clean up office clutter and reduce the accumulation of cardboard boxes and old documents.
  • Establish a daily inspection mechanism. Employees should change their outerwear when leaving work and seal and store their personal belongings.
  • Disinfect and inspect incoming items and second-hand office furniture before bringing them in.
  • If self-treatment is ineffective or the pest infestation is widespread, contact a professional disinfection team.
