Hard Casters of Office Chairs
Hard casters of office chairs may cause damage to the floor. Here is a detailed analysis:

The hard plastic casters commonly used on office chairs are mostly made of PP or PU hard materials. These casters are usually black in color, hard in texture, smooth on the surface but lacking in elasticity. Their characteristics determine that their friction mode with the floor is fundamentally different from that of soft casters. When hard casters roll on hard floors such as wooden floors, tiles, and marble, if there are fine sand particles or dust on the floor, these particles will be trapped between the casters and the floor. Due to the lack of elastic cushioning on the surface of hard casters, they cannot wrap around the particles through deformation like soft casters. Instead, the rolling pressure will make the particles repeatedly rub against the floor like sandpaper. This continuous microscopic friction will gradually wear down the surface layer of the floor, forming fine scratches.
The visibility of scratches is closely related to the floor material and color. Light-colored floors (such as light wood and off-white tiles) have a high reflectivity, so scratches are more noticeable due to differences in light refraction; while scratches on dark-colored floors (such as walnut and dark gray tiles) are relatively less noticeable. In addition, the damage caused by hard casters to the floor has a cumulative effect. After long-term use, even if the scratches from a single use are minor, the overall effect will be a "scuffed" appearance, affecting the aesthetic appeal of the floor.
To reduce damage, the following measures can be taken:
- Replace with soft casters: Choose PU soft casters or rubber casters. These casters have good elasticity and can wrap around particles through deformation, reducing direct friction;
- Clean the floor: Regularly sweep away sand particles and dust on the floor to reduce the probability of contact between the casters and the particles;
- Use floor mats: Lay PVC or rubber floor mats in the area where the office chair moves to serve as a buffer layer between the casters and the floor.
The physical characteristics of hard plastic casters determine their potential damage risk to hard floors. This risk can be effectively reduced through material replacement or environmental management.
