Office Chair Hair Removal
Admin October 09, 2026
The methods for removing hair stuck in the wheels of an office chair can be divided into two categories: disassembly cleaning and daily emergency cleaning. Additionally, preventive measures should be taken to reduce entanglement.

Disassembly Cleaning
- Disassemble the wheels: Turn the office chair upside down, hold the wheel bracket with your hand, and gently pull out the wheel outward (most are designed with snap-on mechanisms). If the wheel is stuck tightly, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry the edge of the snap-on part.
- Clean debris:
- Use tweezers to clamp out long hair strands and carpet fibers from the gaps along the direction of wheel rotation to prevent the hair from getting more tightly entangled.
- Use an old toothbrush dipped in neutral detergent to scrub the surface of the wheel and the gaps in the bearings to remove dust and grease. Rinse with clean water, wipe dry the moisture, and air-dry for 10 minutes (keep the bearings away from water).
- For stubbornly entangled hair, insert a hot sewing needle into the hair clump to carbonize and break it; or soak the wheel in hot water at around 70โ for 15 minutes to soften it, and then use your fingernails to rub off the hair (nylon materials should not be soaked for a long time); or drip peanut oil or olive oil and let it sit for half an hour to dissolve the oily dirt and then pull out the entangled material.
- Lubricate and reassemble: After the wheel is dry, drip 1-2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment (avoid using cooking oil) at the bearing. Rotate the wheel to evenly distribute the lubricating oil; align the wheel with the snap-on part of the bracket and push it in. Listen for a 'click' sound to confirm that it is firmly installed; turn the chair upright and test its smoothness. If there is still stuttering, check for remaining debris.
Daily Emergency Cleaning
- Tweezers/needle-nose pliers: Use medical-grade stainless steel tweezers to insert along the gap of the wheel, rotate the wheel in the opposite direction of hair entanglement, and grab the entangled material.
- Car vacuum cleaner: Select a crevice attachment, press it against the wheel gap, and run it on the highest setting for 10 seconds repeatedly. This is suitable for cleaning freshly dropped hair fragments.
- Toothpicks, hairpins, or pointed tweezers: Turn the chair upside down, hook the hair strands, and rotate the tool clockwise to pull it outward; for rubber wheels, you can use a handheld vacuum cleaner to suck and pick at the same time.
- Paper clips: Bend it into a small hook and insert it along the gap of the wheel axle to hook out the surface-entangled hair.
- Flat-head screwdriver and utility knife: If the hair is tightly entangled, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the wheel cover, leaving a 3-4mm gap. Insert the utility knife at an angle to scrape and break the hair, and then use tweezers to pick out the broken hair.
Preventive Measures
- Lay short-pile polyester carpets in the office to reduce the amount of hair falling.
- Purchase 'anti-entanglement chair wheel covers' as protective covers.
- Clean the chair wheels monthly or lay a small floor mat at the workstation to reduce hair entanglement.
- Maintain the engineering plastic wheel axles with silicone-based grease every quarter to reduce deformation caused by friction and heat.
- Regularly spray WD-40 rust inhibitor for cleaning to dissolve fabric fiber residues and form a protective film; for universal wheels with brake functions, turn the chair over and rotate the wheels while spraying the cleaning agent.
