Cleaning Hair Entangled in Office Chairs

Admin October 14, 2026

When hair gets entangled in an office chair, follow these steps to clean and maintain it:

I. Basic Cleaning Methods

  1. Simple Tool Cleaning
Turn the chair upside down. Use a paperclip bent into a small hook, or a toothpick, hairpin, or pointed tweezers. Insert it along the gap of the wheel axle, hook the surface-entangled hair, and then rotate the tool clockwise while pulling it outward. This method is suitable for shallow entanglement. Be careful not to scratch the surface of the wheel axle during operation.

  2. Lubrication and Lever Principle
If the hair is deeply entangled, do not pull it forcefully. Turn the chair on its side or lift it up. Spray hair conditioner, cooking oil, or lubricating oil into the gap of the wheel axle to reduce friction. Then, use a thin awl or toothpick to pick out the hair strands in the opposite direction of the entanglement. If the wheels are of the plug-and-pull type, you can directly pull them out vertically to release the hair.

  3. Hot Water Soaking Method
For rubber-material wheels, soak the wheels in hot water at around 70ยฐC for 15 minutes. The softened hair strands can be gently rubbed off with your fingernails. Note: Nylon-material wheels should not be soaked for a long time to prevent deformation.

II. In-depth Disassembly and Cleaning

  1. Wheel Removal
Turn the chair upside down. Hold the wheel bracket with your hand and pull it outwards (most are designed with snap-in mechanisms). If it is stuck tightly, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry the edge of the snap-in part. After removing the wheels, check for hair and debris.

  2. Detail Cleaning
Use tweezers to pick out long hair strands and fibers from the gaps of the wheels. Operate in the direction of rotation to avoid residue. Use an old toothbrush dipped in neutral detergent to gently brush the surface of the wheels and the gaps of the bearings to remove dust and oil stains. Finally, rinse with water (avoid getting water into the bearings), wipe dry, and let them air dry for 10 minutes.

III. Installation and Testing

  1. Lubrication and Assembly
Drop 1-2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment onto the bearings and rotate the wheels to distribute it evenly. Align the wheels with the snap-in part of the bracket and push them in until you hear a "click" sound to confirm that they are securely installed.

  2. Function Testing
Turn the chair back upright and push it to test the smoothness of the wheels. If there is still stuttering, you need to re-check and clean any remaining debris.

IV. Preventive Maintenance

  • Regular Cleaning: Spend 5 minutes cleaning the chair wheels every month, or lay a small floor mat in the work area to reduce the probability of hair and dust getting entangled in the wheel axles.
  • Material Selection: Give priority to wheel materials that are easy to clean (such as hard plastic or metal bearings) to reduce the risk of entanglement.
