Office Chair Grinding Floor

Admin October 09, 2026

The issue of an office chair grinding against the floor can be resolved by adjusting the gas lift or replacing the wheels, depending on the specific cause of the wear, which should be identified and addressed accordingly.

Causes and Solutions for Gas Lift Grinding Against the Floor

Causes:

  1. Improper Adjustment: The gas lift is set too high or too low, causing the seat to be too close to the ground.
  2. Aging or Deformation: The seal ring ages, reducing stability, or the base is deformed due to impact, with loose screws.
  3. Control Lever Malfunction: The adjustment lever is not properly secured, stuck with debris, or fails to lock the height after adjustment.
  4. Gas Lift Leakage: Pressing the chair yields no resistance or it sinks automatically, indicating seal failure.

Solutions:

  1. Adjust Height: Immediately lower the seat to the middle position and observe if the grinding stops.
  2. Secure Base: Tighten the base screws with an Allen wrench to restore seat levelness; if the five-pronged feet are deformed, correct them with a wrench.
  3. Add Cushioning Pads: Attach nylon pads (about 3cm in diameter) or anti-slip silicone pads to the bottom of the gas lift to reduce direct friction.
  4. Inspect Control Lever: Clean debris and apply lubricant (such as WD-40) to ensure the adjustment lever can lock the height.
  5. Replace Gas Lift: If there is leakage or seal failure, replace it with an SGS-certified explosion-proof gas lift (such as a 4-stage nitrogen explosion-proof model), ensuring it matches the original lift's height.

Causes and Solutions for Wheel Grinding Against the Floor

Causes:

  1. Concentrated Pressure from Hard Wheels: Nylon or PP plastic wheels have a low friction coefficient, leading to high local pressure under heavy loads.
  2. Ground Abrasion from Sand Particles: Tiny sand particles brought in by shoe soles become embedded between the wheels and the ground, creating a 'sandpaper effect'.
  3. Mismatched Materials: Hard wheels used on carpets or concrete floors wear out faster on PVC, solid wood, or composite floors.

Solutions:

  1. Use Wheel Protectors: Choose foot covers made of TPE, PVC, or silicone and attach them directly to the outside of the wheels, fitting most universal wheels, priced between 20-50 yuan.
  2. Replace with Soft, Silent Wheels: Opt for high-elasticity PU, TPE, or rubber wheels to increase contact area and disperse pressure; ensure the wheel size matches (such as 2 inches or 75mm), prioritizing rodless snap-ring installation.

Precautions: The gas lift contains high-pressure gas; non-professionals should not disassemble it themselves. It is recommended to contact after-sales service or a repair technician for handling. Regularly test the lifting function monthly and avoid overloading (home models are limited to 100-150 kilograms).
