Office Chair Grades

Admin October 08, 2026

The grading of office chairs is primarily based on the grade of the gas rod (pneumatic rod), with international standards dividing them into four grades, where a higher number indicates greater safety. Details are as follows:

Grade 1 Gas Rod: The least safe, it has largely exited the mainstream market. Due to limitations in early manufacturing processes and materials, Grade 1 gas rods perform poorly in pressure tests, posing significant safety risks. They fail to meet the basic safety requirements of modern office environments and are thus gradually being phased out of the market.

Grade 2 Gas Rod: As an entry-level product, it typically has a length between 200 - 250mm and a load-bearing capacity of approximately 80 - 100kg. Designed primarily for users under 170cm in height and with lighter weights, it is suitable for basic office scenarios with low load-bearing requirements. Due to its lower cost, Grade 2 gas rods are commonly found in budget-friendly office chairs, but they may pose safety risks under long-term use or with overweight users.

Grade 3 Gas Rod: The absolute mainstream in the current market, it generally has a length range of 270 - 320mm and a load-bearing capacity of up to 100 - 150kg. Products that have passed strict certifications (such as SGS/TUV) can even have an ultimate load-bearing capacity of 200kg. Grade 3 gas rods strike the best balance between safety and cost, accommodating users over 170cm in height and meeting the needs of most office scenarios. Therefore, they are widely used in mid-range office chairs, computer chairs, and other products.

Grade 4 Gas Rod: Boasting the highest safety standards, it is often referred to as an "explosion-proof gas rod." It features thicker tube walls and more stringent manufacturing processes, with an explosion probability much lower than that of Grade 3 rods. It is primarily used in high-end office chairs, gaming chairs, or scenarios with stringent load-bearing and safety requirements. Although Grade 4 gas rods are more expensive, they provide more reliable safety guarantees and are suitable for long-term use or users with extremely high safety demands.

In addition, the classification of office chairs also involves dimensions such as usage scenarios (e.g., medium-back chairs, high-back chairs, conference chairs), upholstery materials (e.g., hemp-fabric chairs, mesh chairs, leather chairs), and functions (e.g., ordinary computer chairs). However, these classifications are not directly related to the grade of the gas rod and more reflect the differentiated design needs of products.
