Office Chair Got Oil Stain

Admin October 10, 2026

The cleaning method for oil stains on office chairs should be selected according to the material of the chair and the condition of the oil stains, as follows:

Ordinary Fabric Office Chairs

If an oil stain gets on a fabric office chair, you can first wash it with dishwashing detergent or gasoline, taking advantage of their ability to dissolve grease to initially remove the oil stain. Then, wash it with normal soap powder to ensure the fabric is thoroughly clean.

Genuine Leather Office Chairs

  • Freshly spilled oil stains: Immediately use a clean tissue or non-woven cloth to gently press and absorb the oil from the outside in, avoiding wiping back and forth to prevent the oil stain from spreading.
  • Less severe oil stains: You can use a professional leather cleaner. After spraying it, wait for 1 minute, and then wipe it clean with a damp towel. You can also use white toothpaste (choose colorless or white toothpaste to avoid pigment residue), a neutral cleaner, or diluted dishwashing detergent (usually at a 1:10 ratio), and gently wipe with a soft cloth after dipping.
  • Particularly stubborn oil stains: Mix baking soda and cornstarch in a 1:1 ratio and apply a thick layer to the oil stain. Let it sit overnight. Alternatively, dilute white vinegar with water at a 1:3 ratio and wipe, or directly apply baking soda paste (baking soda mixed with a small amount of water to form a paste). For cooking oil stains, you can also use a cotton swab dipped in a small amount of gasoline or alcohol to gently wipe. After dissolution, immediately clean the residue with a neutral detergent. This method should be carried out in a well-ventilated area, away from open flames.
  • Post-treatment maintenance: After the seat is completely dry, apply a special leather conditioner to restore the luster and form a protective film, extending the service life. You can also regularly spray a nano waterproof spray to form an invisible protective layer and prevent oil stains from penetrating.
  • Precautions: Avoid using strongly alkaline cleaners or hard brushes to prevent scratches or fading on the leather surface. Any cleaning method should be tested on an inconspicuous area first to confirm no discoloration or damage before large-scale use. The timeliness of oil stain treatment is crucial. It is recommended to complete it within 48 hours to prevent the oil stains from penetrating deep into the leather fibers. Regular maintenance (every 3 months) can maintain the leather's flexibility and reduce the risk of cracking.

One cleaning method is to try to absorb as much oil as possible and then have the seat covered with leather at an auto decoration shop. Another method is to disassemble the car interior, including the floor and seats, take apart the seats, dry them with an industrial fan in a paint booth, and then reinstall the seats. The third method is indirect absorption. Place cotton cloth, small packets of desiccant, or moisture-proof bags on the seat to absorb moisture, and then blow-dry.

Oil at the Base of Swivel Chairs

You can first use a damp tissue or soft cloth dipped in a small amount of mild dishwashing detergent to gently wipe the oily part of the chair legs. Then, use a homemade oil remover (such as a paste made of baking soda and water) to remove stubborn oil stains. Finally, check if there are any remaining oil stains. If so, use alcohol swabs or medical hydrogen peroxide for further cleaning.
