Office Chair Gas Valve Failure
The failure of the gas valve in an office chair leads to the malfunction of its height adjustment. Here are the common causes and solutions:

1. Handle Displacement
The control handle loses contact with the pin at the top of the gas cylinder, preventing it from triggering the gas valve switch. Solution: Turn the chair upside down and check if the end of the control handle can accurately touch the small metal dot (pin) at the top of the gas cylinder. If misaligned, use a wrench to adjust the position of the base fixing screws so that the handle aligns with the pin, restoring the triggering function. This issue is usually caused by long-term use or external impacts that loosen the components. After adjustment, repeatedly press the handle to test if the height adjustment function is restored.
2. Mechanical Interference (Grease or Dust Buildup)
Excessive grease or dust accumulates inside the base over long-term use, obstructing the rebound of the pin and preventing the gas valve from resetting normally. Solution: Spray a small amount of WD-40 lubricant or sewing machine oil into the gap around the pin. Press the handle repeatedly several times to use the lubrication to remove foreign objects until the pin can rebound smoothly. If the blockage is severe, first use a cotton swab to clean the visible dirt around the pin, and then spray lubricant to assist in the treatment.
3. Complete Valve Seizure or Seal Failure
The internal seals of the gas cylinder age, break, or become clogged with foreign objects, resulting in a complete inability to adjust the height. Solution: The gas cylinder is a one-time sealed component and needs to be replaced as a whole. The specific steps are as follows:
- Safely Remove the Old Gas Cylinder: Prepare tools such as pipe wrenches, rubber mallets, and gloves, and turn the chair upside down. Use a pipe wrench to grip the metal collar connecting the gas cylinder to the five-star base and rotate it counterclockwise (usually reverse threads) to remove it. If the connection is too tight, you can drip some lubricating oil to assist. Depending on the connection method between the chair base and the gas cylinder (clip-on or screw-fixed), use a screwdriver to pry open the clip or unscrew the fixing screws to remove the old cylinder.
- Accurately Measure and Purchase a New Cylinder: Measure the total length of the old cylinder (when fully compressed), the pipe diameter (use calipers to measure the outer pipe diameter, common grades are Class 3/Class 4), and the stroke (the difference between the maximum extension and minimum compression). Take the old cylinder or a photo of its dimensions and purchase a new cylinder of the same specifications with safety certifications (such as SGS/BIFMA). The price is approximately 30-100 yuan.
- Install the New Gas Cylinder: Clean the threads or interfaces of the five-star base and the chair base. Align the bottom of the new cylinder with the five-star base and tighten it clockwise (first by hand and then reinforce with a pipe wrench). Insert the top end into the chair base and fix the clip or screws. After placing the chair upright, repeatedly test the height adjustment to ensure smooth movement and firm locking.
Tip: Wear safety goggles and gloves during operation to avoid injury from the sudden ejection of the gas cylinder or flying parts. If you are not familiar with the disassembly steps, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling.
