Office Chair Gas Spring
The gas spring is the core component that enables an office chair to adjust its height, and its working principle, structure, and safety standards are as follows:

I. Working Principle and Structure of the Gas Spring
The gas spring (gas strut) achieves passive height adjustment through high-pressure nitrogen gas filled inside. Its core principle involves using a control valve to regulate the connection between two gas chambers: when the valve is open, high-pressure nitrogen flows between the chambers, and the pressure difference drives the piston rod to extend or retract, thereby adjusting the height or tilt of the office chair; when the valve is closed, the chambers are isolated, and the chair's height is locked.
Structurally, the gas spring consists of an outer cylinder, inner cylinder, piston, piston rod, and control device. The control device is sealed and installed at the upper end of the inner cylinder, controlling the connection or isolation between the gas chambers and flow paths through mechanical or electromagnetic means. The outer cylinder protects the internal structure, the inner cylinder contains the high-pressure gas, and the piston and piston rod are directly involved in the extension and retraction movements.
II. Safety Standards for High-Quality Gas Springs
The safety of a gas spring depends on the purity of the nitrogen gas and its certification level. The nitrogen purity must reach above 99%. If oxygen or other gases are mixed in, there may be a risk of explosion due to high temperatures or frequent friction. Additionally, high-quality gas springs must pass international authoritative certifications, such as the EN16955 strength rating certification from institutions like SGS and TรV. This standard has strict regulations on the pressure resistance, fatigue resistance, and impact resistance of gas springs, ensuring their safety and reliability during long-term use.
III. Disassembly Method for Gas Springs
If you need to replace or repair the gas spring, follow these steps:
- Lubricate the connection: Apply lubricant to the connection between the chair seat base and the gas spring, and wait for at least 30 minutes to allow the lubricant to fully penetrate and reduce disassembly resistance.
- Separate the chair seat: Use a rubber mallet to evenly tap the four corners of the chair seat base, avoiding localized force that could cause damage. After tapping, the connection between the chair seat and the gas spring will gradually loosen.
- Lubricate the connection between the five-star base and the gas spring: Apply lubricant to the contact surface between the five-star footrest and the gas spring, and wait again for penetration.
- Separate the gas spring: Tap the outer periphery of the bottom of the gas spring to separate it from the five-star footrest. When tapping, use a cloth to prevent the footrest from getting scratched or cracked.
By following these standardized procedures, you can safely complete the disassembly and replacement of the gas spring.
