Office Chair Gas Spring Removal
Admin October 16, 2026
The removal of the gas spring (pneumatic spring) in an office chair should be carried out step by step. Before starting the operation, prepare tools such as a flat-head screwdriver, a Phillips-head screwdriver, and a wrench, and ensure a safe operating environment.

I. Rod Body Removal (Preparing for Gas Spring Removal)
- Secure the Chair Position: Place the office chair flat on the ground with its side facing up to ensure stability during the operation.
- Separate the Seat from the Lifting Gas Cylinder: Use a wrench to loosen the nut at the connection point between the seat and the lifting gas cylinder, and remove the seat from the lifting gas cylinder. Then, insert the lifting gas cylinder into the base on the ground (such as the original base) and keep it vertically fixed.
- Remove the Pneumatic Rod: Use a wrench to loosen the nut at the connection between the pneumatic rod and the lifting gas cylinder, and separate the pneumatic rod from the lifting gas cylinder. Next, remove the backrest bracket connected to the pneumatic rod, and note the connection positions of each component for subsequent installation.
II. Gas Spring Removal (Core Steps)
- Release the Pressure in the Gas Spring:
- Fix the disassembly support column (a dedicated fixing tool) on the ground to ensure its stability.
- Insert the removed pneumatic rod into the hole of the disassembly support column to make the gas spring operable.
- Key Operation: Press the release valve at the top of the gas spring (or operate according to the instructions) to release the internal pressure and avoid component ejection due to high pressure during disassembly, which could cause injury.
- Separate the Gas Spring from the Pneumatic Rod:
- Use a wrench to loosen the nut at the lower end of the pneumatic rod where it connects to the gas spring. Apply even force to avoid nut slippage.
- Slowly pull the gas spring out from the pneumatic rod. If the connection is tight, gently shake it to assist in separation.
- Inspection and Cleaning:
- After disassembly, check the surface of the gas spring for deformation, cracking, or air leakage. If there is obvious damage, replace it with a new part.
- Wipe the interfaces of the gas spring and the pneumatic rod with a clean cloth to remove dust or oil stains and ensure smooth subsequent installation.
III. Precautions
- Safety First: Wear protective gloves during the operation to avoid being scratched by metal components. Keep your face away when releasing the pressure in the gas spring to prevent high-pressure gas or parts from popping out.
- Matching Tools: Use a wrench that matches the size of the nut to avoid thread damage due to an ill-fitting tool.
- Record the Steps: Take photos to record the positions of each component during the disassembly process for easy restoration during reassembly.
- Professional Maintenance: If the gas spring is internally damaged (such as air leakage or jamming), it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional maintenance technician for replacement. Non-professionals should not disassemble the internal structure of the gas spring by themselves.
