Office Chair Gas Spring

Admin October 16, 2026

An office chair gas spring is a device that enables height adjustment without the need for a power source, primarily used in office chairs and similar products to regulate height or tilt.

Working Principle

The working principle of an office chair gas spring is based on the high-pressure nitrogen gas filled inside. Its internal structure includes components such as an outer cylinder, inner cylinder, piston, and piston rod. The control device is hermetically installed at the upper end of the inner cylinder, allowing selective connection or isolation between the gas chambers and flow channels. By controlling the valve to regulate the connection and isolation between the two gas chambers, the piston rod is driven to extend or retract using pressure differentials, thereby achieving height adjustment. Specifically, when the chair needs to be raised, the valve is opened to allow high-pressure nitrogen gas to enter the gas chamber on the piston rod side, pushing the piston rod outward and raising the chair. When the chair needs to be lowered, the valve is closed, and the gas in the gas chamber on the piston rod side is released, causing the piston rod to retract under external pressure and lowering the chair.

Key Components and Certifications

High-quality gas springs must ensure the purity of nitrogen gas and pass EN16955 strength grade certifications from third-party organizations such as SGS and TรœV. These certifications serve as important guarantees for the quality and safety of gas springs, ensuring they can withstand certain pressures and loads during use without leakage or explosion risks.

Safety Risks

If low-quality gas rods are used or the purity of the filled gas is insufficient, the pressure inside the gas rod may suddenly increase under conditions of frequent height adjustment or high temperatures, posing an explosion risk. There is a gas cylinder between the seat and the base of a pneumatic height-adjustable chair, filled with nitrogen gas at a pressure of 1 to 2 atmospheres and sealed with a seal ring. If the seal ring ages or is damaged, nitrogen gas may leak, causing the gas rod to lose its height adjustment function and even leading to safety accidents. Therefore, when choosing an office chair, it is advisable to select products from reputable manufacturers and regularly inspect the condition of the gas spring to ensure its safety and reliability.
