Office Chair Gas Cylinder Replacement
Admin October 16, 2026
The replacement of the gas cylinder in an office chair can be carried out according to the following steps:

I. Prepare Tools
You need to prepare in advance a wrench or pliers, a rubber mallet or wooden mallet, lubricating oil or grease. In some cases, a pipe wrench can also be used as an auxiliary tool. A wrench or pliers are used to grip the nut of the gas cylinder. A rubber mallet or wooden mallet can prevent damage to components during striking. Lubricating oil or grease are used to deal with a stuck gas cylinder. A pipe wrench can assist in disassembly by gripping both sides of the gas cylinder.
II. Remove the Old Gas Cylinder
- Adjust the Position: Place the office chair on a flat and stable surface, ensuring that the gas cylinder is perpendicular to the base to prevent the gas cylinder from getting stuck during disassembly due to angular deviation.
- Loosen the Nut: Use a wrench or pliers to grip the nut at the top of the gas cylinder and rotate it clockwise until it is loose. If the nut is rusty or too tight, you can first spray lubricating oil or grease on it and wait for 5 - 10 minutes to allow the oil to penetrate the threads.
- Loosen the Gas Cylinder: Turn the chair upside down and gently tap the bottom of the gas cylinder with a rubber mallet or wooden mallet to gradually loosen the connection between the gas cylinder and the base. If the gas cylinder is still firmly attached, you can try turning the chair upside down again, strike the connection between the seat and the gas cylinder, then turn the chair back upright, step on the chair feet and pull the seat upwards to separate the gas cylinder using leverage.
- Deal with a Stubborn Gas Cylinder: If the gas cylinder is difficult to remove due to long-term use or rust, you can spray lubricating oil multiple times at the connection between the gas cylinder and the base, wait for the oil to penetrate, and then strike it to create small gaps at the junction. You can also use a pipe wrench to grip both sides of the gas cylinder and rotate it slowly to loosen it.
III. Install the New Gas Cylinder
- Select a Compatible Gas Cylinder: Choose a new gas cylinder according to the length and specifications of the original one, ensuring that it matches the hole diameters of the seat and the chair feet. If the gas cylinder is too long or too short, it may cause abnormal height adjustment of the chair or a decrease in stability.
- Insert the Gas Cylinder: Insert one end of the new gas cylinder into the hole at the bottom of the seat and the other end into the hole of the chair feet, ensuring that the gas cylinder is perpendicular to both the seat and the chair feet. You can gently rotate the gas cylinder while inserting it to help it enter the holes smoothly.
IV. Precautions
- Operational Safety: Keep the office chair perpendicular to the base during disassembly and installation to prevent the gas cylinder from getting stuck due to tilting. Control the force when striking to prevent damage to components or injury from flying parts.
- Seek Professional Help: If you have tried multiple methods but still cannot remove the gas cylinder, or if the gas cylinder is damaged internally and causing air leakage, it is recommended to contact a professional repair person to handle it to avoid potential safety hazards from self-operation.
