Office Chair Gas Cylinder Assembly
The office chair gas cylinder assembly is a core mechanical structure that enables infinite height adjustment of the seat through air pressure differentials and piston movement, designed with both comfort and safety in mind.

Structural Components
Cylinder and Piston
The cylinder is a sealed metal container filled with pressurized nitrogen or an inert gas, housing a movable piston. The piston is connected to the seat base via a slender rod, with the cylinder end fixed to the bottom of the seat and the piston rod end fixed to the base housing. The sealed design between the piston and the cylinder wall ensures no gas leakage while allowing piston movement under air pressure.Valve System
A small valve is located at the top of the cylinder, controlled by a height adjustment lever. The lever, typically positioned beneath the seat, operates the valve through mechanical linkage. When the valve is open, gas can flow between the inside and outside of the cylinder; when closed, the pressure inside the cylinder is locked.Outer Cylinder Design
Some high-end cylinders are encased in a sealed outer cylinder, forming a double-layer structure. The outer cylinder recovers trace amounts of gas leaked from the inner cylinder, maintaining a high-pressure environment inside. This ensures the seat can still adjust normally when unoccupied, extending the service life.
Working Principles
Ascending Process
When the adjustment lever opens the valve, high-pressure gas from the outer cylinder flows into the inner cylinder, pushing the piston downward. Due to the larger surface area of the piston compared to the cross-sectional area of the rod, the air pressure differential creates an upward force, raising the seat.Descending Process
When the valve is open, gas from the inner cylinder leaks through the valve to the outer cylinder or outside, reducing the pressure. The piston moves upward under the weight of the seat and the occupant, lowering the seat.Locked State
When the adjustment lever is released, the valve closes, stopping gas flow between the inside and outside of the cylinder. At this point, the pressure inside the cylinder balances, and the piston is locked at the desired height, fixing the seat height.
Safety and Maintenance
Gas Purity
The cylinder is typically filled with high-purity nitrogen (purity โฅ 99%). Poor-quality gas springs or insufficient gas purity can lead to abnormal internal pressure, posing an explosion risk. Consumers should choose products certified by safety standards such as BIFMA.Usage Guidelines
Avoid frequent height adjustments to reduce valve wear; regularly inspect the outer cylinder wall for gas leaks, deformation, or rust, and replace it immediately if any abnormalities are found.
Market Applications
Gas cylinder assemblies are widely used in office chairs, gaming chairs, and ergonomic chairs, supporting weights up to 250 pounds (approximately 110 kilograms). The accessory market offers gas springs in various specifications, with stroke ranges from 120 mm to 180 mm, meeting different seat design requirements.
