Office Chair Gas Cylinder

Admin October 09, 2026

The office chair gas cylinder, also known as a pneumatic rod, is a key component used to adjust the height of the seat. It is generally safe under normal use, but attention should be paid to purchasing and usage specifications.

Composition and Working Principle of the Pneumatic Rod

The pneumatic rod is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas inside and adjusts the seat height through the telescopic movement of the piston rod within the cylinder. Its core structure includes the cylinder, piston, seals, and gas filling chamber. Nitrogen, as an inert gas, is chemically stable and cost-effective, making it the primary filling material for legitimate products.

Explosion Risks and Safety Mechanisms

The main causes of explosions are impure gas or material defects:

  1. Gas impurities: If the filling gas contains active components such as oxygen, the heat generated by friction during movement may trigger a chemical reaction, leading to a sudden increase in gas pressure and even an explosion. However, legitimate products use pure nitrogen, making such risks extremely low.
  2. Material issues: The rod core seal of low-end products is relatively thin and may crack due to metal fatigue after long-term and frequent use, causing rapid gas release (characterized by a 'pop' sound as it ejects), but usually without causing serious harm.

Grades and Purchasing Recommendations for Pneumatic Rods

The mainstream pneumatic rods on the market are classified into grades II, III, and IV:

  • Grade II: Low price but prone to air leakage, suitable for short-term use scenarios.
  • Grade III: The best cost-performance ratio, balancing stability and cost, suitable for office and home use.
  • Grade IV: Strong load-bearing capacity, but the price doubles, suitable for high-intensity use requirements.

Points to note when purchasing:

  1. Certification marks: Check if there are international safety certification stamps such as SGS or TUV at the bottom of the pneumatic rod.
  2. Operational experience: Manually adjust the seat height to feel whether the lifting process is smooth without jamming.
  3. Explosion-proof design: Inquire whether the product is equipped with an explosion-proof steel plate (located at the bottom of the seat to cushion the impact in case of accidental failure of the pneumatic rod).
  4. Price threshold: Avoid purchasing low-priced products below 200 yuan, as these products may use inferior materials or omit safety designs.

Usage and Maintenance Specifications

  1. Avoid frequent adjustments: Reduce mechanical wear on the piston of the pneumatic rod to extend its service life.
  2. Regular inspections: Check the appearance of the pneumatic rod every six months for cracks or air leakage. If any abnormalities are found, replace it immediately.
  3. Choose legitimate brands: Prioritize purchasing products that have passed national 3C certification or international safety standards to reduce risks from the source.
