Solutions for Large Gaps in Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

Large gaps in office chairs can be addressed through the following methods, with the appropriate solution chosen based on the actual situation:

  1. Install a Backrest Cushion
If the chair design permits, select a thick backrest cushion to fill the gap. The cushion not only improves comfort but also reduces sliding risks through special fabrics (such as non-slip materials). It is advisable to choose a cushion that matches the chair's dimensions to avoid poor filling effects due to size mismatches. Pay attention to the cushion's fixing method; some products come with straps or Velcro for enhanced stability.

  2. Fill with Sponge Blocks
Cut the sponge into wedge or trapezoid shapes and insert them into the gap at the back of the chair, adjusting their positions for a tight fit. This method is suitable for smaller gaps or irregularly shaped ones. For further comfort optimization, high-elastic materials like memory foam can be used, offering stronger support and effectively relieving back and neck pressure. After filling, check that the sponge is secure to prevent shifting.

  3. Inspect and Maintain the Frame Structure
If the gap issue is caused by a loose or damaged chair (such as loose screws or a deformed frame), contact a professional repair technician for inspection and repair. Regular maintenance (such as tightening screws and lubricating joints) can extend the chair's lifespan and reduce gap enlargement due to structural problems. After repair, it is recommended to conduct a pressure test to ensure even weight distribution on the chair and prevent the reappearance of gaps.

  4. Place a Round Rug for Concealment
Lay a round rug behind the chair to visually conceal the gap while enhancing the overall sense of space. For rug material, short-pile or flat-weave options are recommended for easy cleaning and reduced slippage. If the chair needs to be moved frequently, choose a rug with a non-slip backing to prevent shifting due to friction, which could affect the concealment effect.

  5. Temporarily Fill with Clothing
In emergencies, folded clothing (such as sweaters or scarves) can be stuffed into the gap as a temporary solution. This method is simple to operate but requires attention to the clothing material to avoid using fabrics that easily slip or pill. Long-term use may cause clothing deformation, so it is recommended only as a short-term transitional measure.

Precautions: If the chair is rented or public property, confirm in advance whether modifications are allowed; when filling materials yourself, ensure there are no sharp edges or flammable components to guarantee safety during use.
