Office Chair Gap

Admin October 08, 2026

The gaps in office chairs may be caused by wood characteristics, craftsmanship design, quality issues, or hygiene hazards, and need to be addressed according to the specific situation.

Gaps Caused by Wood Characteristics and Craftsmanship Design

The gaps in solid wood office chairs may stem from the natural characteristics of the wood or intentional craftsmanship. Natural characteristic gaps are caused by the shrinkage and swelling of wood: when the ambient humidity changes, the wood absorbs or releases moisture, leading to dimensional changes. These gaps are natural phenomena and cannot be completely avoided. Craftsmanship expansion gaps are intentionally left by craftsmen, usually appearing at the joints between panels such as chair seats and tabletops and their frames, with a width of no more than 0.3-0.5 centimeters. Their function is to reserve space for the expansion and contraction of wood with seasonal and humidity changes, preventing the frame or corner tenons from being cracked by expansion. They are functional designs. These gaps are normal and do not affect structural stability.

Quality Issue Gaps Due to Improper Production or Use

If the gaps are irregular and appear in non-reserved areas, they may be quality issues. Common causes include: incomplete wood drying leading to uneven moisture content and subsequent shrinkage and cracking; drastic fluctuations in ambient humidity causing wood deformation; and daily collision damage compromising structural integrity. These gaps may affect aesthetics or stability and can be prevented by controlling ambient humidity (e.g., using humidifiers or dehumidifiers), avoiding violent collisions, etc. If necessary, contact the manufacturer for repairs.

Hygiene Hazards: Cockroach Infestation and Cleaning Methods

The gaps in office chairs can easily become hiding places for pests such as cockroaches, with food residues and skin flakes providing a food source. When cleaning, you can use a vacuum cleaner: select a flat nozzle to reach deep into the gaps; use a brush in combination to dislodge attached dirt; use steam for disinfection (if the equipment supports it) to kill eggs at high temperatures; and seal promptly after cleaning by using tape or special seals to close the gaps and reduce pest infestation.

Methods for Dealing with Large Gaps at the Back

If the large gap at the back of the office chair affects comfort, you can try the following methods: install a backrest cushion to increase support; stuff sponge blocks into the gap to fill it; check if the frame is loose and reinforce it to prevent the gap from widening due to structural issues; place a round rug behind the chair to reduce the sense of visual emptiness; and stuff clothes folded into strips into the gap as a temporary solution.
