Functional Classification of Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

The functional classification of office chairs primarily revolves around design features and usage scenarios, and can be divided into the following six categories:

1. Ergonomic Chairs
With dynamic adjustment as their core function, ergonomic chairs are designed to accommodate different body types and sitting postures through adjustable seat height, armrests, backrest angles, and lumbar support. Key components such as headrests, lumbar supports, and armrests support multi-directional adjustments, precisely distributing body pressure, making them especially suitable for individuals who work at desks for extended periods. Some high-end models are equipped with a synchronous tilting function, allowing the backrest and seat cushion to adjust in tandem, further reducing the burden on the lumbar and cervical spine.

2. Mesh Office Chairs
Mesh office chairs utilize high-elasticity mesh fabric, which offers significantly better breathability than traditional materials, reducing the feeling of stuffiness in summer. Some models feature waterfall-edge seat cushions, which use curved edges to alleviate pressure on the back of the thighs and promote blood circulation; some support reclining functions and come with retractable footrests to meet the needs of afternoon naps. The elasticity of the mesh also provides moderate support, preventing sagging during prolonged sitting.

3. Leather or Fabric Office Chairs
These chairs are commonly used in management offices or conference settings, with a focus on aesthetic appeal. Leather models enhance a sense of prestige through leather upholstery and high backrests that provide a wrap-around support; fabric models, on the other hand, create a warm atmosphere through textile patterns. These chairs have relatively poor breathability, but this can be partially improved through perforated designs or breathable inner linings. Their functionality emphasizes image display rather than long-term comfort.

4. Staff Chairs
Staff chairs prioritize basic functions and are typically upholstered in mesh or leather, equipped with height adjustment and 360ยฐ rotation capabilities, priced between 200-500 yuan. Their design meets the needs of standard sitting postures for eight-hour workdays and is suitable for bulk use in open office areas. Some models enhance comfort with thicker seat cushions or fixed lumbar supports, but they have fewer adjustment functions and focus on cost-effectiveness.

5. Executive Chairs
Priced between 800-2000 yuan, executive chairs are positioned for management spaces, emphasizing not only comfort but also status symbolism. Their design features thickened seat cushions, high-resilience foam, and static lumbosacral support, providing stable support through fixed-angle backrests. Some models are equipped with genuine leather materials and metal accents to enhance their presence, making them suitable for receiving clients or formal meeting scenarios.

6. Multifunctional Adjustable/Folding Chairs
Designed for flexible office needs, adjustable chairs use gas springs or mechanical structures to achieve height adjustments, accommodating different desk heights; folding chairs, on the other hand, save space with their collapsible frames, making them suitable for temporary offices or shared workstations. Some models integrate features such as casters and detachable armrests to further expand their usage scenarios.

It should be noted that some brands integrate multiple design elements, such as ergonomic chairs using mesh fabric or executive chairs adding adjustable functions, to create differentiated product lines. Users should evaluate their choices based on usage scenarios, budget, and health needs.
