French Translation for Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

There are two common expressions for 'office chair' in French: 'la chaise de bureau' and 'le fauteuil pivotant'.

'La chaise de bureau' is the most general term. Literally, 'chaise' means 'chair' and 'de bureau' means 'of the office', so together they mean 'office chair'. This expression covers all types of office chairs, whether they are ordinary fixed chairs or chairs with some adjustable features. As long as the chair is used in an office setting, it can be described as 'la chaise de bureau'. For example, in a traditional office, there are rows of chairs for employees to sit on during their daily work. We can say 'Ces chaises sont des chaises de bureau', which means 'These chairs are office chairs'.

'Le fauteuil pivotant' focuses more on a specific type of office chair, namely the 'swivel chair'. 'Fauteuil' itself means 'armchair', and 'pivotant' means 'rotatable'. So 'le fauteuil pivotant' is an office chair with armrests that can rotate. This kind of chair is usually designed with wheels, making it easy for users to move freely within the office area and improve work efficiency. In modern office environments, swivel chairs are very common, especially in positions that require frequent communication with different colleagues or multi-directional operations at the desk. For instance, when a designer is drawing blueprints, they need to constantly turn their body to view the design effects from different angles. Using 'le fauteuil pivotant' would be very convenient. We can say 'Le designer utilise un fauteuil pivotant pour travailler', which means 'The designer uses a swivel chair to work'.

In actual communication, if you are just referring to office chairs in general, using 'la chaise de bureau' is sufficient. If you want to specifically emphasize that it is a rotatable office chair, then 'le fauteuil pivotant' is a more accurate choice.
