Office Chair Frame Renovation

Admin October 13, 2026

Renovating an office chair frame requires systematic step-by-step operations, with the core processes including dismantling and cleaning, frame repair and sanding, and surface treatment. For complex structures or precious materials, it is advisable to contact professionals.

1. Dismantling Old Fabric and Cleaning

If the chair surface fabric needs to be replaced, first remove the old fabric and clean up any remaining nails, glue, or other accessories to avoid interference during subsequent operations. If the chair frame requires painting or repair, it is recommended to remove soft parts such as cushions and backrests first to thoroughly clean surface stains, dust, or old paint. For metal frames, check if screws and connectors are loose, and tighten or replace damaged parts in advance. For wooden frames, remove wood shavings and insect-infested residues from the gaps to prevent affecting the repair effect.

2. Frame Repair and Sanding

  1. Structural Inspection and Repair:

    • Wooden Frame: Check for cracks or looseness in the chair legs, crossbeams, and other parts. Minor cracks can be filled with wood glue and fixed with clamps for more than 24 hours. For severe cracks (such as those involving load-bearing structures), metal corner braces or professional reinforcement parts should be used to enhance stability. For precious materials like rosewood, it is recommended to contact a professional craftsman to avoid devaluing the item through improper self-repair.
    • Metal Frame: Check for weld breakage and stripped screw holes. Re-weld broken welds and fill stripped holes with metal glue or replace with thicker screws. If the frame is deformed, use a hydraulic press to straighten it and then reinforce it.
  2. Sanding Treatment:

    • After repair, sand the frame surface with 240-grit sandpaper, focusing on removing burrs, old paint layers, or rust. For wooden frames, sand along the grain direction to avoid scratching the material. For metal frames, sand until the surface roughness is uniform to enhance the adhesion of new paint.
    • Some renovation services introduce 3D scanning technology, using high-precision equipment to obtain three-dimensional data of the chair frame and reinforcing local areas (such as the base of the chair legs) with carbon fiber-reinforced composite materials. This not only restores load-bearing capacity but also reduces overall weight, making it suitable for high-end office chair renovations.

3. Painting or Surface Treatment

  1. Painting:

    • Wooden Frame: Choose an environmentally friendly wood paint (such as water-based paint or Sanqing paint) and adjust the color as needed. Apply thin coats with a roller or brush in 2-3 layers, with an interval of 2-3 hours between each layer to ensure an even paint layer without runs. Use a small brush to touch up gaps or details, and finally lightly sand the surface with 600-grit sandpaper to enhance gloss.
    • Metal Frame: Use spray paint (such as silver spray paint) to coat support rods and other parts, maintaining a distance of 20-30 centimeters during spraying and applying multiple thin coats to avoid paint layer cracking due to excessive thickness.
  2. Key Reminders:

    • If the chair involves complex structures (such as gas lifts or rotating bases) or precious materials (such as solid wood or genuine leather), it is advisable to consult professional repair personnel first to avoid further damage due to improper operation.
    • After renovation, ventilate and dry for more than 24 hours before use to ensure that paint or glue odors are completely dissipated, ensuring safety during use.
