Formaldehyde Inspection of Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

The formaldehyde inspection of office chairs requires a comprehensive assessment through professional methods, standard determination, and vigilance against falsified inspection reports.

I. Inspection Methods Three common methods are used for formaldehyde inspection:

  1. Desiccator Method: The test piece is suspended in a desiccator containing water. After formaldehyde is released and dissolved in the absorption solution, it is measured by colorimetry using a spectrophotometer after color development, with results expressed in mg/L. This method is a standard inspection method for wooden furniture and is suitable for preliminary screening of formaldehyde emissions from the surface of panels.
  2. Environmental Chamber Method: The test piece is placed in an environmental chamber with constant temperature and humidity, and the formaldehyde concentration in the chamber air is measured, with results expressed in mg/mยณ. This method simulates the actual use environment, reflects the dynamic release level of formaldehyde, and is often used for arbitration inspection of panels, with results closer to the actual use state.
  3. Perforator Extraction Method: The free formaldehyde inside the panel is extracted using a solvent and then quantitatively analyzed, with results reflecting the formaldehyde content level of the material itself. This method is mostly used for the inspection of unfinished base materials, such as raw materials for artificial panels.

II. Inspection Standards and Exceedance Determination

  1. Standard Basis: The limits and methods specified in product standards should be used as the basis. Different inspection methods have different determination principles and units, and the values cannot be directly converted. For example, according to China's "Classification of Formaldehyde Emission from Wood-based Panels and Their Products" (GB/T 39600 - 2021), qualified office chairs should use environmentally friendly panels such as Eโ‚ grade (โ‰ค0.124mg/mยณ) or ENF grade, with well-sealed edges.
  2. Exceedance Risk: Non-qualified products that use inferior panels, do not have effective edge sealing, or cut corners may have excessive formaldehyde emissions. Portable detectors can be used for on-site preliminary screening, but their data cannot replace the inspection results of standard methods. The report issued by a professional institution should be used as the basis.

III. Market Inspections and Inspection Report Issues

  1. Market Inspection Situation: According to the national supervision inspection results of office chairs released by the State Administration for Market Regulation, excessive formaldehyde emissions are one of the common problems. For example, in a certain inspection, 4 out of 101 batches of products had excessive formaldehyde emissions, accounting for about 4%.
  2. Falsified Inspection Reports: Some merchants falsify inspection reports. For example, a woman in Shenzhen bought an office chair online, and the inspection report provided by the merchant showed that the formaldehyde was "qualified". However, after verification by relevant departments, the report with the same number on the official website clearly indicated "unqualified", and the merchant was suspected of falsifying data. Consumers should verify the authenticity of the report through formal channels to avoid being misled by false information.
