Office Chair Formaldehyde

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chairs may indeed have formaldehyde issues. The following provides a detailed explanation from different aspects:

Firstly, some office chairs are primarily made of artificial wood panels, which are produced using materials containing formaldehyde during the manufacturing process. Artificial wood panels are typically formed by bonding wood chips or fibers with adhesives, and these adhesives often contain formaldehyde components. During the use of office chairs, formaldehyde from these panels is gradually released, affecting indoor air quality and potentially posing a risk to human health.

Secondly, according to the national supervision and inspection results for office chairs released by the State Administration for Market Regulation, there are cases of non-compliance with formaldehyde emission standards. For example, one batch of office chairs from Anji Dipu Risheng Furniture Factory, Liaoning Kangfu Furniture Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Enrong Office Furniture Co., Ltd., respectively, were found to have non-compliant formaldehyde emissions. This indicates that some office chair products on the market have deficiencies in controlling formaldehyde emissions, and consumers need to exercise caution when making purchases.

Additionally, there are instances where merchants provide false inspection reports. A consumer once purchased an office chair online, and the inspection report provided by the merchant showed that the formaldehyde emission was "qualified." However, upon investigation by relevant authorities, it was found that the inspection report provided by the merchant did not match the conclusion of the inspection report with the same number displayed on the official website of the inspection and testing center, which explicitly stated that the formaldehyde emission was "unqualified." This behavior not only deceives consumers but also increases the risk of consumers being exposed to office chairs with excessive formaldehyde levels.

To reduce the harm caused by formaldehyde in office chairs to the human body, consumers should choose products from formal channels and well-known brands when purchasing office chairs, check the product's quality inspection report to ensure that the formaldehyde emission complies with national standards. At the same time, newly purchased office chairs can be placed in a well-ventilated area for a period of time to allow formaldehyde to fully volatilize before use.
