Retracting the Footrest of an Office Chair

Admin October 10, 2026

The method for retracting the footrest of an office chair usually depends on the type of footrest. You can refer to the following steps for operation:

I. The "Three-Step Method" for Retracting a Retractable Footrest

  1. Locate the Switch
    The switch positions for the footrests of office chairs vary greatly among different brands and models. Common locations include the underside of the seat side, the bottom of the seat, the connection point of the footrest, or the inside of the armrest. Some designs may be hidden at the junction of the footrest and the seat, requiring careful observation or touch to find.

  2. Perform the Correct Operation
    Before operating, ensure that the footrest is fully extended to avoid jamming due to partial extension. There are three common operation methods:

  • Upward Pull Type: First, pull the footrest upward to release the lock, and then push it back in under the seat;
  • Inward Push Type: Simply grasp the footrest and apply steady force in the direction of the seat until you hear a "click" indicating successful locking;
  • Pedal Unlock Type: Press the end of the footrest or a specific pedal with your foot. After hearing the unlock sound, push it back in with your hand.
    Note: Perform the actions gently to avoid damaging the components due to excessive force.
  1. Check for Proper Retraction
    If the footrest still cannot be retracted after operation, check for the following issues:
  • Foreign Object Obstruction: Check the telescopic track or gaps for any debris and clean it before retrying;
  • Component Misalignment: Try aligning the footrest with the original buckle or connection point, gently press down with your body weight while coordinating the retraction action;
  • Mechanical Failure: If conventional operations are ineffective, it may be due to damage to internal components such as springs or gears, requiring contact with the manufacturer for repair.

II. Special Operation for Buckle-Type Footrests

Some office chair footrests have buckles on both sides, and the operation logic is different from that of retractable types:

  • Extension: Squeeze both buckles simultaneously, and the footrest will slowly pop up. Gently pull to fully extend it;
  • Retraction: The operation may be the opposite. Press the buckles while pushing the footrest back under the seat.
    Tip: This type of design is more common in high-end office chairs. It is recommended to consult the instruction manual before operation to confirm the specific steps.

III. Precautions

  1. Avoid Violent Operation: Forcing the push or pull may cause deformation of the footrest or breakage of connecting parts;
  2. Regular Maintenance: Check the lubrication of the footrest track monthly. Cleaning dust can extend its service life;
  3. Consult the Manufacturer: If the cause of the failure cannot be determined, prioritize contacting after-sales service or consulting the product manual to avoid voiding the warranty due to self-disassembly.
