Office Chair Footrest Fracture

Admin October 14, 2026

If the footrest of an office chair fractures, it should be stopped using immediately, and a repair or replacement plan should be selected based on the fracture situation. The specific handling methods are as follows:

If the fracture occurs at the caster wheels of the five-star base, first confirm the wheel type. Threaded caster wheels are removed by rotation, while pin-type ones require a tool to pry open the buckle and then pull them out. When installing new wheels, ensure that the model matches the original ones to avoid uneven force distribution due to size differences. If the wheels only rotate inflexibly, first check if the internal bearings are stuck, apply a small amount of lubricating oil, and then test. Replace them only if the issue remains unresolved.

If the main body of the five-star base fractures, is severely deformed, or detaches from the central column, it needs to be replaced entirely. Before operation, place the chair on its side or upside down on a soft pad to prevent damage to the seat or the gas lift. Choose the disassembly method based on the connection type: for flat washer and snap ring fixed types, use needle-nose pliers to grip the snap ring and pull it out; for conical press-fit types, use a rubber mallet to gently tap the connection between the five-star base and the central column to gradually separate them. When purchasing a new five-star base, check the diameter of the central column, the diameter of the five-star base, and the material (such as nylon or metal) to ensure compatibility with the original chair structure. During installation, align the new five-star base with the central column, gently tap it with a hammer until it fits snugly, and then reinstall the snap ring or flat washer for fixation.

If the bracket is tightly connected due to rust, first spray a rust remover on the rusted area and wait 10-15 minutes for the rust layer to soften. After wearing anti-slip gloves, gently tap along the edge of the connection with a rubber mallet to avoid deforming the metal surface by direct tapping. If the rust is severe, tap multiple times with a 5-minute interval between each tap until the component loosens. If it still cannot be disassembled, try heating the connection with a hot air gun (temperature controlled below 60ยฐC) to assist in loosening using the principle of thermal expansion and contraction.

Special case handling: If the chair costs less than 200 yuan, has been used for more than 5 years, or the fracture involves core load-bearing structures such as the gas lift or the seat, the repair cost may be close to or exceed the price of a new chair, and the safety after repair is difficult to guarantee. In this case, it is recommended to directly replace the chair with a new one, prioritizing products certified by BIFMA or EN1335 to ensure compliance with standards for load-bearing capacity, stability, and environmental protection.
