Office Chair Footrest Broken

Admin October 09, 2026

If the footrest of your office chair is broken, you can choose to repair or replace it based on the extent of the damage, as follows:

Damaged Casters

This is a relatively simple repair scenario. First, identify the type of caster. Common types include threaded and pin-type casters. For threaded casters, turn them counterclockwise by hand or with a tool to unscrew them. For pin-type casters, use both hands to firmly grip the caster, press down, and rotate it left and right to pull it out. When installing new casters, ensure that the model, size, and load capacity of the new casters match those of the original ones. For threaded new casters, screw them in clockwise and tighten them. For pin-type new casters, insert them vertically with force until you hear a 'click' indicating they are securely in place.

Issues with the Five-Star Base Itself

  • Plastic Five-Star Base: If there are cracks, severe deformation, or detachment from the central column, it is generally recommended to replace it directly. The price is usually in the tens of dollars. If you really don't want to replace it or throw away the chair, you can take temporary repair measures. Drill two to three small holes at each end of the broken part, place a wooden board or other suitable object underneath for support, and then thread wire through the holes and tie it together with the board. However, this repair method has relatively poor stability and is only a temporary emergency solution.
  • Five-Star Bases of Other Materials: They can be replaced as a whole. First, place the chair on its side or gently invert it onto a soft pad and observe the connection method between the center of the five-star base and the bottom of the gas lift (central column). If it is fixed with a flat washer and snap ring, find and remove the snap ring to extract the five-star base. If it is a conical press-fit, gently tap the connection with a rubber mallet to loosen it and then remove it. When purchasing a new five-star base, ensure it matches the original chair base. You can also consider switching to a steel or aluminum alloy base, which has better load-bearing capacity than nylon.

Other Repair Methods

You can try using glue or screws for repair. However, before repairing, clean and sand the broken part to ensure a smooth surface and straighten the broken part to ensure stability after repair.

If you are unsure how to repair or replace the chair base, it is advisable to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair technician. They can provide more professional advice and assistance. When repairing or replacing the chair base, pay attention to safety and avoid using overly sharp tools and dangerous chemicals.
