Office Chair Foam
The foam used in office chairs usually refers to recycled foam, which is made by bonding foam waste with glue. It poses certain health risks and has issues with service life. Some office chairs also use memory foam as cushion material, offering better comfort and durability.

Recycled Foam: Low Cost but with Hidden Dangers
Recycled foam is a common type of โfoamโ used as a filler for office chair cushions. Its manufacturing process involves collecting the off-cuts and waste generated during foam production and then re-forming them into new foam blocks through glue bonding and compression. This material costs about half as much as virgin foam, so it is adopted by some mid-to-low-end office chairs to reduce production costs. However, recycled foam has two main problems:
- Risk of formaldehyde exceeding standards: Glue used in the bonding process may contain formaldehyde-based chemicals. If the production process is substandard or the glue is of poor quality, formaldehyde emissions can exceed safe levels. Long-term exposure may cause respiratory irritation, skin allergies, and even increase the risk of cancer, posing a greater threat to sensitive groups such as pregnant women and children.
- Poor support and easy deformation: Recycled foam generally has lower density and elasticity than virgin foam. After more than six months of use, it is prone to โsagging,โ meaning the cushion becomes indented and cannot return to its original shape, reducing comfort and potentially affecting posture and spinal health.
Memory Foam: A Better Alternative
Some mid-to-high-end office chairs use memory foam as cushion material. Memory foam is a slow-rebound polyurethane foam with the following characteristics:
- Conforms to body contours: It slowly deforms under pressure, evenly distributing body weight and reducing pressure on the buttocks and thighs, making it suitable for prolonged sitting.
- Good breathability: Memory foam typically has an open-cell structure, allowing better air circulation than traditional foam, reducing stuffiness and providing greater comfort, especially in summer.
- High durability: High-quality memory foam can maintain its resilience for 3-5 years without sagging, ensuring long-term support.
- Wide price range: The price of memory foam cushions varies depending on density, thickness, and brand, ranging from a few yuan to tens of yuan. Consumers can choose based on their budget.
Buying Recommendations
When selecting an office chair, prioritize the cushion material:
- Avoid low-priced products that may use inferior recycled foam, especially those with a pungent odor (which may indicate formaldehyde exceeding standards).
- If the budget allows, memory foam cushions are a healthier and more comfortable choice, but opt for products with higher density (e.g., 50D or above) to enhance durability.
