Office Chair and Floor Damage

Admin October 22, 2026

Office chairs may cause damage to the floor, but this can be avoided by choosing the right wheels, using protective pads, etc. Marks can also be repaired through methods such as wiping and sanding.

Causes of Damage

  • Wheel Material: Hard plastic nylon wheels are tough and rough, easily leaving scratches and wearing off the paint on wooden floors when moved.
  • Floor Wear Resistance: Solid wood floors have relatively poor wear resistance. Frequent friction from the wheels of a rolling chair at the same spot can easily leave scratches or even indentations.
  • Usage Habits: Frequently sliding in the same spot and rapidly rotating the chair increase the risk of local wear.
  • Gas Spring Issues: Improper height adjustment of the gas spring, such as when adjusted to the lowest setting and the metal structure of the chassis touches the ground; worn base components, such as the nylon wheel axle wearing down and forming burrs; and aging displacement of the gas spring, such as insufficient internal nitrogen pressure leading to automatic settling, can all cause the office chair to scrape the floor.
  • Ground Adaptability Issues: There is a hardness difference between glazed tiles and the aluminum alloy material of the gas spring chassis. When the office chair slides on the tile surface and the contact pressure exceeds the bearing strength of the ordinary tile glaze, scratches will appear.

Methods to Avoid Damage

  • Choose the Right Wheels: Prioritize PU soft-covered silent wheels. Their outer layer is made of soft rubber material, which is soft and tough, rolls smoothly, and will not scratch or damage the floor. When choosing wheels, consider their structure. It is best to choose fully-wrapped soft wheels, where the entire wheel is wrapped in soft rubber with no hard edges exposed.
  • Use Protective Pads: Lay down protective pads. For example, PVC protective pads can effectively buffer pressure and block rigid conduction between contact surfaces.
  • Adjust the Height of the Gas Spring: When adjusting the gas spring, leave a 1 - 2cm gap to prevent the metal structure of the chassis from touching the ground.
  • Choose Gravity-Sensing Wheels with Braking Effect: When sitting on the chair, the damping decreases, making it easier to slide; when getting up and leaving, the damping increases, reducing unintentional sliding friction.
  • Pair with Soft-Bottomed Foot Pads: If you are worried about the chair scratching the floor, you can contact customer service to pair it with soft-bottomed foot pads.

Methods to Repair Floor Marks

  • Wipe with a Cloth Dipped in Dish Soap: Suitable for shallow scratches.
  • Clean and Wax with Vaseline: First, wipe off the surface dirt. Then, apply Vaseline to a clean cotton cloth and spread it evenly back and forth along the wood grain. After it dries, wipe it several times with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Sand with Sandpaper: First, sand the rough surface with coarse sandpaper, and then repolish it with finer sandpaper. This method is only suitable for furniture such as tables or tea tables that are originally made of solid wood. Be consistent in force and ensure there are no missed spots. After completion, wipe off the surface residue with a clean towel.
  • Purchase Special Ointment: You can directly purchase special ointment for removing floor marks to remove theๅฐ่ฎฐ (marks).
  • Use Hand Lotion or Children's Facial Mask: These can remove the marks; for deeper marks, you can gently cover them with nail polish of a similar color.
