Office Chair Fixed Recline

Admin October 13, 2026

The methods for fixing the recline of an office chair vary depending on the type of adjustment mechanism. Details are as follows:

1. Knob-type adjustment
This is the most common adjustment method, suitable for most ordinary office chairs. The adjustment mechanism is usually located on the right side beneath the seat, appearing as a circular or oval knob.

  • Unlock: Rotate the knob counterclockwise to release the locked recline angle.
  • Adjust the angle: Slowly lean back your body to the desired angle, feeling whether the recline resistance is appropriate during the process. Some knobs support adjusting the magnitude of the recline resistance, which can be achieved by simply rotating the knob.
  • Lock: Tighten the knob clockwise to fix the current recline angle. If re-adjustment is needed, repeat the above steps.

2. Lever-type adjustment
Commonly found in gaming chairs or high-end ergonomic chairs, the adjustment lever is generally located on the left or right side beneath the seat, mostly made of plastic.

  • Unlock: Pull the lever upward to release the recline lock, allowing free adjustment of the backrest angle.
  • Adjust the angle: Adjust the backrest to the appropriate position according to your needs. Some levers support infinitely variable adjustment, meaning that after releasing the lever, the backrest can stop at any angle.
  • Lock: Release the lever, and the lock automatically engages in the fixed position, completing the angle lock.

3. Wrench-type adjustment
Mostly used in old-fashioned or simple computer chairs, the wrench is usually located beneath the seat near the rear legs.

  • Unlock: Turn the wrench to release the locked recline state.
  • Adjust the angle: Lean back your body to the desired angle. Some high-end models support recline angle memory function, allowing you to preset 2 - 3 commonly used angles and achieve quick adjustment with a single button press.
  • Lock: Return the wrench to its original position to lock the current angle.

4. Special adjustment methods
For office chairs that can lie flat or models with special designs, specific methods are required:

  • Wire control issues: If the backrest cannot be adjusted, first check whether the wire control switch closes automatically. If it does not close, the wire control may be loose, broken, or disengaged, and you need to re-attach the terminal of the wire control.
  • Gas cylinder issues: Check whether the small gas cylinder connecting the backrest has gas. If the gas cylinder is out of gas, the recline function will fail, and you need to replace it with a new one.
  • Combination of handle and knob: On some office chairs, pushing the right-side handle to the left locks the recline, and pulling it to the right unlocks it. The cylindrical knob on the chassis can be rotated clockwise to increase the rebound support force and counterclockwise to decrease it, allowing users to adjust according to their needs.
