Illustrated Guide on How to Disassemble the Five Legs of an Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

There is currently no illustrated guide for disassembling the five legs of an office chair, but you can refer to the following methods for operation:

General Disassembly Approach

After prolonged use of an office chair, the gas rod and the chair legs may become tightly fastened, making disassembly relatively difficult. First, try to separate the chair back and raise the gas rod to its highest position. Then, firmly grasp the seat cushion with one hand and press the height adjustment lever with the other hand while gently shaking it several times to attempt to remove the base. After completing this step, invert the chair legs and use a rubber mallet to strike the connection point between the gas rod and the chair legs. A rubber mallet can effectively reduce damage to the components. If you don't have a rubber mallet, you can use a piece of wood as a cushion to avoid directly striking and damaging the components.

Experience-Sharing Methods

Experienced individuals have provided other effective disassembly methods. One method is to invert the chair and suspend it in the air, then use a hammer to gently strike the central gas rod little by little. During the striking process, pay attention to applying an appropriate amount of force. After a few strikes, the gas rod and the chair legs may separate.

There is also a more professional method that requires some tools, including a 16-ounce (a heavier one like a 24-ounce is even better) rubber mallet, a 14-inch pipe wrench, and WD-40 rust remover and lubricant. First, carefully use the pipe wrench to disassemble the part of the gas rod that connects to the seat. During the disassembly process, you can appropriately use WD-40 rust remover and lubricant, which can act as a lubricant and make the disassembly easier. Hold the five-claw with one hand and strike it with the rubber mallet. If the component remains immobile, find a hard surface to place it on and continue striking. By increasing the striking force and stability, you can prompt the separation of the gas rod and the chair legs.

When disassembling the five legs of an office chair, pay extra attention to safety to avoid injury due to improper operation. At the same time, since different brands and models of office chairs may have differences in structure and component connection methods, if the above methods fail to successfully disassemble the chair, it is recommended to contact the after-sales service of the office chair or a professional repair person to obtain more accurate disassembly instructions.
